Yoichi Wada: Western Games Are Better Because They Have More Money

Yoichi-Wada-president

While at TGS, Yoichi Wada, president of Square Enix, brought attention to what he calls a Japanese gaming industry crisis. In his mind, Japanese games are not selling so well nowadays because the American developers have way too much capital to develop new games. Capital is obviously the problem, it has nothing to do with the following:

  • Japan’s biggest companies rehashing the same old franchises for decades
  • Delayed releases in the west
  • Great gems of Japanese gaming never seeing the light of day in the west
  • Assuming what the western gamer wants

No, of course its the money. He went on to call for Japanese developers and publishers to ally in a move to bring back glory to the Japanese gaming market. How about a new IP Yoichi? Huh? Is that too much to ask for?

    Oh no you didn’t girlfriend!

The latest JRPGs are totally different to the old ones, now they have 40 hours of in-engine cut-scenes instead of streaming pre-rendered ones. :-P

Be careful what you wish for. Heh heh.

More money does not = Better game. There are a number of games that balloon in price as ends up as being a black eye to the studio.

I think focusing on a new IP or if you are going to expand a current IP try something different, that hasn’t been done aka Dirge of Cerebus aka Final Fantasy Devil May Cry.

I think they’re working hard to change that. The remakes of the first two Ys games for the DS are going to be released in the States next year, the first Star Ocean game was released in the States some time ago.

But yeah, a new IP would be nice and all. Japanese gaming industry just hasn’t been the same ever since the PSX era…
