In what was surely a plot involving ninjas and spies IGN obtained official Wii developer documentation detailing some nice technical details and previously undetailed information. Some of these details include the function of the recently discovered SYNCHRO button and the function of the LEDs in the controller.
The SYNCRHO button is according to documentation a way to let the Wii detect controllers which it will be using and assign an I.D. to them.
Evidently gamers first press the SYNCHRO button on the console itself and then find and press another SYNCHRO button located inside the battery compartment of the Wii controller. Documentation also suggests that gamers can hold down the 1 and 2 buttons on the Wii-mote to accomplish the same task.
As for the LEDs, they indicate what player number the control uses. That was fairly obvious but the information goes on to say that those LEDs also serve to display how much battery the controller has.
