Wii 2 for 2010!?

According to a Nintendo marketing employee, Wii is set to have a successor as soon as next year! Some info on the system are as follows…
- Wii 2 will feature a blu-Ray disc drive in a bid to prevent piracy.
- Support for 1080p resolution for both blu-ray movies and games.
- Due to release in the third quarter of 2010, in a worldwide same day release.
- Trade-in scheme for existing Wii owners to receive a discount on the new hardware.
- An announcement would come a month before release date, riding on the back of viral marketing to build hype.
If Wii 2 had the same specs as a GameCube or a Wii (they’re both the damn same anyway) then blu-ray space would be wasted. It could be telling that there is nothing what-so-ever in these key Wii 2 details regarding the systems’ graphical capabilities. Could you imagine if the Wii 2 was exactly the same as the original Wii, but with a blu-ray drive, HD support and nothing else!? That sounds like some shit that could actually fly at Nintendo. Just look at the evolutionary steps from the DS, to DSi, to the the DSi LL. Nintendo aren’t ones to fully embrace current technology. They always prefer to creep 5 years behind everybody else.
And as for the trade-in scheme? I cannot see Nintendo going for that. They made no effort to offer such a scheme for DS lite owners who would like to upgrade to a DSi, so I can’t see them doing it for their consoles. Nintendo are all about printing their own money. Not helping others save it.
A new Nintendo system with a blu-ray drive would be really cool. Even though Nintendo probably wouldn’t allow it to play blu-ray movies without a 16-digit blu-ray movie code.
It’s all speculation, but it’s rather exciting. A new Nintendo console with full HD output and a blu-ray drive would certainly make sense given the current games-scape – which is why I’m inclined to not believe it could happen. Because it sounds like way too much sense for Nintendo to actually go along with. I hope I’m wrong.

A Wii HD is due much sooner than a PS4 or third Xbox. However, seeing how the Wii is only three years old, I don’t think we’ll see Nintendo’s follow up for at least a year or two. Given how Nintendo likes to keep things close to the chest, I would be surprised if any Wii successor news breaks during E3 2010.
i see this as Wii 2.0…
sort of like PS3 Slim yes?
not realy a next generation console but with added thingies…
and if such a trade in thing was to come in effect i would consider trading in my current wii for the new one… although how such things might come about is still a big question for me
Another Wii????
Sounds plausible… But there’s nothing to be excited about tbh… Seure, a redesign with Blu-ray and HD output sounds good… But really, who are they aiming for? I just don’t think there’s an incentive for the mayority of Wii owners outside of hardcore people or Nintendo fanboys (if they exist still) to trade up. And if they keep both consoles on the market with the Wii 2 at a higher price point… Well that’s just batshit retarded.
And that trade-in scheme is just BS… No way that that’s gonna happen.
yah.. it all sounds shady.. but thats the ways of rumors.. or perhaps the beginning of such viral marketing…
one way to go would be to price the new Wii as the current one and drop the price on the old one… or just replace them… as if a recall of a product… gods know xD
i hold no true exitement over this.. i own no HD tv… and have no problem really with the current wii… and while i have seen the image that blu ray offers in movies… it doesnt spoil the story for me wich is the true reason i see movies in the first place…
if it comes.. yay… if it doesnt i wont shed the provervial tear
i thought just a while ago the CEO for nintendo said they weren’t going to do Blu-ray?
and who pirates Wii games? Seriously?
I know plenty of such pirates
Speculation that for whatever reason Wi games dont get pirated is just plain silly, so if you really ask “seriously?” then plenty of people do would be the serious answer.
Bbut then again, i’ve seen plenty of pirated Blu Ray movies already out there, o i dont think it’ll do much for stopping piracy…
I’m not saying there aren’t, I’m saying why would anyone want to pirate Wii games? It’s more of a facepalm at people who do it than at the idea of someone doing it. It’s not as if a wii or the games are as expensive, and if you’re willing to go so far you might as well have spent the money on a modded Xbox or PS3 (not that I’m endorsing anything; I only have a normal PS3).
The main question is, I’m still confused at how a few days ago (I think) I saw news that they WEREN’T going to make a new Wii2, when news is that the are. And now I can’t find that other news, so I’m kind of confused.
well in yer case i imagine you prefer the ps3 or the xbox wich are aimed at a different audience… as for running pirated games on a Wii it doesnt need a physical mod.. theres a software hack that lets you play pirated games, and DVD movies.. at no extra expense… and then theres the imports…
i myself have just a Wii now and will buy a PS3 at the end of the year
OK, let’s slow down. Why would the best-selling, last console of this generation to come out put out an upgraded version before anyone else?
First off, Kuroneko, the PS3 slim actually has fewer features than any other PS3 to date, it just came out at a lower price point.
Second, Nintendo stayed away from HD with the Wii in the first place because their core audience didn’t seem interested. The only way to play your gamecube in progressive scan was to get a cable by mail-order from Nintendo, of which 5% of gamecube owners did. The same thing happened to DVD/CD support on the Wii. If it drives up the asking price and people won’t use it, what’s the point?
A Wii that plays blu-ray discs is completely pointless, as the technology itself would drive up their production cost to the point where they’d start backpeddling like Sony, who by the way are $4.6 billion dollars in debt from the PS3.
Everyone wants more features, but as long as their consoles are the best-selling and their production costs are the lowest, not to mention attracting millions of people to gaming that wouldn’t try it otherwise, there’s no reason to change.
Sorry if that came off harsh. Yes I’m a fanboy, and I know that impairs my judgement.
i never meant to compare it with the PS3 persé… only inthemeans that a new version of the same system came out (regardless of loss or gain of features)
and yeah… like i mentioned before.. im fine with my current Wii and dont really care if the rumor goes the way of the infamous Triforce room in OoT xD
and i also knew that nintendo was aware that at the time of launch all houses were not equipped with HD tv and whatnot…
its easier to assume that most if not all houses of the end users already have a DVD player than a HD TV by mi guess, and from day one i knew that the PS3 would cost sony a bunch..
no..err harshness taken =D
hmm. an upgraded Wii? naah, I’m ok with my DVD-playing Wii.
It has to have significant better graphic capabilities to make me buy another.
agreed… i havent done the software hack on mine… but i do my movie whatching on my dvd player… and well.. i barely have time to play the original games i own .. much less if i started downloading ISOs xD
i dont do HDTV yet… so i’ll hold out ti’ll the next gen console or buy a PS3 if finances allow at the end of the year
This all looks fake to me.
I don’t think it’s true. A new verion should bring with it features for which customer are tempted to make an upgrade and these ones are surely not.
