Video Game Justice Japanese Style

Boing Boing recently posted about a man’s journal writings on being in a Japanese prison for about a month, its a fascinating read if you wonder how prisons are on one of the world’s most orderly societies. But besides that, this little bit caught my eye, when the author, “George”, tells the story of his cellmate.

His charge was robbery, which he quite readily admitted. He saw an opportunity to make some money and he took it. ¥1 million worth of Nintendo game software was sitting in the warehouse in which he worked and he figured that they needed to be sold. He pocketed around ¥300k but within a few days it was fairly obvious to his bosses that he had done it. In fact not long after he had started making sales to shops in Akihabara, he had some sort of accident on his bicycle and jarred his back. He could not go to work for a week and was laid up in hospital when his boss decided to check his locker at work where, low and behold, lay a stack of gaming software that he hadn’t yet been able to take home.

From over $8000 he only managed to get about $280 and a couple of months in prison. See kids? There’s a lesson in there for all of you: dont get caught.

I am, of course, just kidding, piracy is bad, stay in school, eat your vegetables and all that jazz.
