U.S. Otaku Jailed 6 Months For Loli In A Box

All characters depicted in this image are 36 years of age or older, divorced and very, very mean.
We’ve been hearing about this case since sometime in 2006 when customs officials opened up a package for Christopher Handley, a U.S. Otaku from Iowa, containing a couple of lolicon manga volumes. Now a court has seem fit to Jail him for 6 months for possession of “obscene visual representations of the sexual abuse of children.”
Now, considering the maximum sentence he could have got was 15 years, he got off easy. But this case raised serious issues about what constitutes harmless artistic expression, even if pornographic, when it comes to depicting seemingly underage characters.
Now, I hate child abuse in any form as much as the next guy, but punishing for mere drawings seems like an exercise in thought-crime and a dangerous precedent for artistic expression. Add this to the fact that from the many lolicons I’ve met in my life not one of them has been into actual children; hell, not one of them was into actual human beings. These people usually suffer from a very deep case of 2D complex and while they are messed up in more ways than one, they’d first die of seclusion than commit an act of abuse against any human being.
A charged topic if I ever saw one, what’s your take?

Well, i am afraid that with so much child abuse rampant nowadays, something had to happen, and it did. Some semi-harmless bloke got arrested and as Nahu said, got it real easy. I am expecting to see no change at all on those laws and restrictions. Let’s not forget the Chile case, wich some people might know about.
as an artist i find this a bit distressing… not that i go around drawing minors in sexual situations mind you but in the general concept of artistic expression (no matter how fucked up it can be) and the appreciation/consumption of art.
censorship of a visual extention of freedom of speach.
im also against child abuse by the way xD
like nahu mentioned, many who like this things don’t actually go around raping children, the same way videogame fans don’t turn the trip to school or work into a beat’em up or FPS.
still its is no secret that Artistic expresion/consumption is somewhat controlled in the US to keep the populace remotely happy and fulfilled while the more daring get snuffed out before they can casue any real “damage” by expressing themselves truly.
i call shenanigans…
“Add this to the fact that from the many lolicons I’ve met in my life not one of them has been into actual children; hell, not one of them was into actual human beings.”
Precisely! As a lolicon myself, I’d have to say the first part is highly accurate. I would rather die than commit any act of abuse or harm towards a child. Knowing this, many naturally turn to a harmless, 2D art that helps them relieve their sexual urges in a way that hurts nobody. And really, once you begin to censor art it’s a slippery slope down from there.
A man getting arrested for “Pictures” of underage girls? And I’ll be pissed if this is a case of getting him before he commits a crime, just because someone likes an underage girl, doesn’t mean that they’ll rape/abuse one, I am a lolicon, and I can’t stand rape or abuse to children, and if a man wants to have a book, no pictures of anything real, then he should be able to have it, no matter what is “drawn” it’s not real, it’s fake, now I bet you don’t hear about people getting in trouble because they play games where you kill people, no. I call this bullshit, the person who brought this up was probably a parent worried about the children.
good article nahu. brave of you to speak out against this, and i commend that. unfortunately the situation is even worse over here in australia.
Yeah, I hear you’re surrounded by deadly animals and most of your population is genetically criminal!
All kidding aside, I know you guys have it worse. How are those protests against the giant firewall coming?
Fuck yeah Australia! Yeah we do have it bad, and here I thought we were laid back
I’d say that if more and more, people who make a living crusading against the rights of gays are turning out to be closetted self-loathing gays (I’d list them but they are too numerous, only the latest example of the guy who founded the AFA who went for a 2 week massage spree with his Rent Boy,) then maybe we can say that these same conservative christian crusaders seeking pedophiles behind ever manga purchase are themselves attracted to children.
I like my art with a bit of secondary sexual characteristics evident, but you’re right, we aren’t talking child predators here. They just want to hug their Sakura body pillows and cry themselves to sleep.
I mean really? Are you serious? You just said something severely offensive as if it were an offhanded fact. People like you are the reason we’ve got such issues with violence against Christians in China. The same could be said of any group of unpopular peoples anywhere on the planet. Loli’s for example. Once a few people start spreading terrible rumors, everyone thinks they’re monsters. I’m a conservative christian who has attended tea parties, and I have absolutely no problem with gays, black people, loli’s or any other type of person I may run into in my life. I was raised to be courteous and loving, and to come up against people who assume that I’m some hypocritical ass just because of my religious views is really highly disturbing. It irks me. As human beings we need to learn to be more accepting and less easily influenced by other people’s opinions.
There’s still debate over it’s legality. If you fight it correctly you maybe ok.

yeah that shouldnt be illegal and doesnt mean they will do or have done anything sexually abusing to children or anyone :(
