Mike Capps of Epic Games, playing industry pundit, says that new consoles from any of the big three won’t even be around until 2012 at the earliest…and 2018 at the latest. THQ CEO Brain Farrell concurs, adding that we might have to wait seven or eight years until the next gen.

According to Forbes’ Chris Morris, who wrote the original article collecting these findings, the graphics technology in development for the next step in gaming infrastructure is going pretty slowly.

I find it hard to agree with such conservative estimates. Although we already know that Sony plans to give the PS3 a ten-year life span, the other competitors will be hungry to produce new consoles first. Nintendo in particular realizes they need to catch up in terms of graphical quality, and I think because of that they will be the first to produce a system in the next gen. They’re also in the best financial position to do so. What do you guys think?

Though I know there are varying feelings on Michael Pachter, I think he has the right guess that a Wii HD will be coming and relatively soon. Though, I guess I’m assuming nothing really drastic happens in the economy.

Next would be the Xbox 360 as I think the DVD format might become more and more of a hinderence. However, I haven’t researched how much space the average PS3 game takes on the Blu Ray. So far, developers are doing quite a job packing in what they want into those DVD-9s.

I heard that Hideo Kojima actually complained about lack of space, and Blu-Ray disks hold up to 50GB of data! Microsoft will eventually have to surrender to Sony and implement a Blu-Ray drive in the 360.

While Blu-Ray has won I think Microsoft will stick with HD dvds as their game unit. They may switch to separate Blu-ray players. But if MS while use the argument that is suits them for copy protection since HD is defunct. 360 is a great system and the games are very fun, but I think a nextgen from MS will be sooner rather than later as many capabilities of the system is already known. This system is more for the “hardcore” gamer as well.

Sony will be the laggard in next-gen. Better system, but too $, not a strong online service, too big, no library, but I think that will change in about 3 yr time.

Nintendo will IMHO be the first to release plans for nextgen. They are typically more innovation-centric. Wii HD will be a nice addition to the system, but there are still kinks to be worked out. My thoughts are that Nintendo will be the first to, at the very least, attempt AR (augmented reality) capabilities with there console. While I don’t want to be pegged a fanboy for the system, Nintendo has been on the mark lately and opened causal gaming.

Gee, would Kojima have more cutscenes? D:

Microsoft, and Gates at one point said that the next big format was not HD-DVD, but neither was Blu-Ray. The next big format is online distribution. People arent really buying the change to HD media just yet. It hasnt really dented the DVD market yet and I think before it actually does digital distribution will be a a practical reality.

But I have to agree, Nintendo will make the jump first, soon after MS will follow and if things continue as they are Sony will stick to their jammed guns and wait too long to fix its mistake.

BTW, what is that picture of? I recognize a lot of the components, and based on the article I guess it’s some sort of game system, but I don’t recognize it. Is it an early Pong game or something?
