Anyone who was gaming in the N64 era (I cant believe the N64 is retro now) will tell you Goldeneye was the party game back then. I can remember playing deathmatch on the same map for 12 hours straight. It was the perfect game. I still play it every now and then. Nintendo apparently knows this and is trying to bring the classic title to the Virtual Console.

Reggie was quoted in an interview with MTV saying the following: “Suffice it to say we would love to see it, so we’re exploring all the rights issues.” Those issues are quite complex and in some scenarios Ive heard they would have to deal with Sony and Microsoft. Quite an ordeal but worth the fight? Definitely.

So what is a nostalgia filled gamer to do when the call of blasting your opponent’s face with remote mines wakes you up at night?

Short of hooking up the old N64 and firing up that Goldeneye cartridge (if you have one) you can go for Goldeneye: Source, a remake based on the source engine. We’ve talked about Goldeneye: Source before and they just announced they are ready to release another beta to the public.

The future is bright for this old gem that refuses to go quietly into the night. Just a tip: dont hold your breath for the VC version, better start scouting ebay for that cartridge.
