The Day No Consoles Will Fight

Have you ever thought, amidst a fanboyism haze, that maybe, just maybe there wont be a Playstation nor a Nintendo or an Xbox in the not so distant future? Well that’s what Eric-Jon Rössel Waugh envisions for the future! Now, now, before you scream ‘heretic’ and run get your pitchfork give Mr. Rössel a chance.
Rössel writes about the concept of a commission for gaming standards, which would, in theory, dictate the direction of the industry hardware-wise. Or at least they would agree to disagree and be a governing body that makes every different path the industry takes. Say, they would make the Xbox 360 and the Wii have equal support from developers.
Yes, it all a big mix pot of ideas that only sound good in paper. Rössel did go on to say some insightful words:
Honestly, at its current rate I don’t know how much further the industry can go unless we do all band together and start watching out for our best interests as a community – a community based around a living, growing thing that needs nurturing and foresight.
Yes this all sounds wonderfully and if we boil it down to its core points it calls for a console build on a scalable model that can run games regardless of slight differences in hardware capabilities. Hmm I’m afraid to say it but its already been done, its called PC gaming and its been doing its own thing for years while console makers rip each other’s throats off.
