RIZ-ZOAWD Trailer Emerges, Shows Awkward Control Scheme

Aside from having one of the stranger names in JRPG history, RIZ-ZAOWD is also interesting in its plot source, the mid-western tale of The Wizard of Oz. What originally garnered our interest in the game was the soundtrack: The combined forces of Hitoshi Sakimoto (Final Fantasy Tactics, Odin Sphere) and Michiko Naruke (Wild ARMs series) will no doubt produce something spectacular.

Equally spectacular is the game’s visuals, as shown in the trailer above. What seemed like an actual gameplay test showed some bright visuals, and even reflections on water. What’s less impressive is the game’s control scheme. While the game gets points for trying to be completely touchscreen based, they could have resorted to something other than a trackball for movement. The battles are completely touchscreen-based, as well. We’ll have to wait and see if there’s a D-Pad + Buttons control scheme when it releases in Japan this winter.

I want this. I’m impressed with the pushing of the boundaries the DS. I hope this would have enough interest to bring stateside.
