Holy pre-natal nostalgia, Batman! Positive Ape Index has some scanned images from a 70’s Bandai toy catalogues. Just look At that Mazinger Z up there, it really asks nothing of today’s figures. I wasn’t around in the 70’s and only got to know Mazinger through reruns of reruns in the 80’s and 90’s but damn these images make me wish I had been there. Just think of all those proto-otaku drooling over these figures in a world that did not understand them at all… well that part hasn’t really changed, has it?

DUDE! I have a couple of these! They are solid metal. I’ll post pics when I get home in a couple hours. I also used to have one that was like 18…maybe 24″ tall with a hollow rubber head that I remember pulling off. I don’t know what happened to that one, but I remember seeing it at Super 7 in SF once for like $400!
Now that KidKobun is commenting it, i think he might me talking about a line of toys/figures called Chogokin(g) wich as he said, were made of metal! I read an article about it at Animerica (**howling and laughing ensues**) eah i’m that old. We are that old.
Also, for those who are curious, the 1st PRangers we saw on TV are ZyuRangers at Japan. If you think the story at the U.S.A. was “Bad” wait till you see what was the story about originally xD. At least Zordon made it look like something “futuristic”. The equivalent character originally was just an old wizard.
I remember I saw a Getter Robo, or was it Mazinger, or both at a mall so long ago selling for 100+. Those catalogs are pretty amazing for 70s.
I wish they aired Dairanger after MMPR but it was too asian for their taste.
