While Destructoid seemed to think that this GPS functionality was brand new, I managed to find out that it’s been out in Japan for over a year now. Now it’s finally being shipped to the US, and Sony’s marketing manager, John Koller said titles are currently developed for use with the add-on.

There was no mention of Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops from Koeller, although that game did use the add-on in the Japanese version to generate location-specific maps. So far there are no plans to have older games use the GPS in the US, and many games will actually be based around the gadget.

Does this mean we’ll be seeing real-world locations play roles in our fictional game worlds? Will we only get some content in big cities rather than out in the boondocks? I’m not entirely excited about the idea yet, but it will be interesting to see what comes of it.

      Huh
I wonder if they will bother with the camera too.
