Never Saw It Coming: Portable Xbox Will Happen… Eventually

We knew it was coming, it just made sense. Every time the Zune got an upgrade the rumors came flooding once more. “Microsoft is making a handheld!” Well of course they are but up until now it wasn’t anything but business logic and rumors. No more though! Shane Kim, a MS VP recently declared in an interview that "For us, it’s a matter of focusing on ‘when’". That, right there, is an admission of what we all knew was going to happen. He went on to say:
"because if we chased after a mobile or handheld opportunity, we would not have the resources and ability to do things like instant-on 1080p HD, Facebook, Twitter, Project Natal … And so we’ve chosen to focus on the living room experience from a hardware standpoint, if you will, but we’re building a service in Live that will… extend to other platforms. No question about it."
Oh, cool stuff Microsoft, so not only are you confirming that you will eventually release a handheld but that it will run Live? Well color me shocked! What’s next, are you going to announce this device will use electricity? Oh right, I shouldn’t get ahead of myself, an announcement like that will probably take another 2 years.

I thought the Zune HD was going to be their definitive handheld device. I doubt Microsoft will be delving into that domain anytime soon, seeing how it’s already populated by the PSP and Nintendo DS and how the problems of the PSP could also be the same for Microsoft as it is to Sony.
Hopefully it won’t be something that’s too foreign from Windows. A Microsoft portable would be wise to make leaps from Windows PC easy. However, I hope they don’t fall in to Sony’s trap and think that a portable Halo, Gears of War, Forza, or Call of Duty will make the portable a success.
They have enough money to try, fail and try until they get it right. They’ve done it before and they’ll do it again.
Two years? In Japanese-American Time, that’s too early…
I doubt this will happen, to be honest. I mean he didn’t EXPLICITLY say there was going to be one. And if you all remember we were supposed to have Live on our cell phones AGES ago. Customizing your Forza cars on the go, checking your XBL messages, checking your Madden stats and whatnot. So I think that’s what he’s talking about. Some sort of app. or service or something that will extend Live into phones.
Just what we need… ANOTHER portable gaming console! Sign me up as long as you can hack the hell out of it. The only reason i still use my psp for the most part is emulation on the go :p
