Japan is at it again, trying its best to have mecha out as soon as possible. This time they are not going the giant robot route, a la Gundam, but are once again pursuing the power suit, a la Patlabor. Engineers at Kyoto’s Activelink Co. have developed this little beauty you see above, called the Dual-Arm Power Amplification Robot, or DAPAR for short. Sure it needs a better name but it’s nearly fully movable and amplifies both arm and leg movement, enabling you to lift over 90 kg without a hitch.
Yeah, it cant hurl armored vehicles like pillows just yet but they are aiming to make it fully mobile and have it in practical use by 2015. Add a couple of extra years and they’ll have the DAPAR swinging an oversized sword and firing an enormous sub-machine gun.

while i find this fascinating… i cant help but think that the american Big Dog being developed by Boston Dynamics and DARPA (i just realized is the same leters in DAPAR.. i know its stupid but it amused me for the moment xD) seems to be giving the japanese a run for their mecha money…
the fluidity of its movement and its uncanny “holy shit! its like its alive” factor is the stuff of nightmares…
still this power suit thing still is pretty impresive
see the Big Dog and fear its whirring horror.. @.@

But big dog isnt humanoid, it cant hold an oversized weapon, it’s not piloted by a teenager. Big Dog is sterile.
immagine Big Dog’s Technologies… Movement, balance, balance (twice, i know.. but its freaking impressive), and a possible UI that might let you pilot the think without moving in slo-mo
Big Dog is currently planned as a mecha-mule.. a beast of burden if you will (useless in the field now since its not really that quiet)…
now imagine they manage to increase the weight of the burden, mand make that burden an oversized weapon… that things seems to be able to compensate for the weapons recoil as to not just fall like an overturned turtle o.o
4 legs.
not the first time a human would have piloted a quadruped in fiction o.-
or something similar to how a segway balances in 2 weels for a humanoid one?
I don’t care who makes mecha first, just as long as i can get my hands on one. legal or not. :)
But its great to see that were getting closer.
GOSH
I place money on the Big Dog. As much as i am part-japanese (1/4) i favor more the cuadrupedal evil creature. We can place some nice Rocket Propet Grenade-launcher and some control at distance and we can at least have a homebrew Gekko. Just add an mp3 player, some scary sounds and we can play “Gyo” infested creatures, from the creator of “Uzumaki”
cool stuff. I recall seeing a mecha oversuit like the Dapar that would increase strength and such. I remember watching it on TV.

That one?
No, it was not. If I find a video, I’ll post it here.
