Marvel And Madhouse Announce Anime Adaptations of Wolverine And Ironman

Its Christmas in July! Marvel and Madhouse just announced and released 2 teasers for a 4 part series of anime movies featuring Marvel superheroes. The first two teasers are for Ironman and Wolverine and I am all hyped up which, if you’ve been reading Dark Diamond for a while, you’d know it’s no easy task.
The films are supposed to redesign “popular Super Heroes redesigned and repurposed as emerging from the fabric of Japanese culture” and from the teasers you’ll know they are serious about this. The project is slated for spring 2010 and oh boy it cant come soon enough. Watch both teasers and my take on them after the break.
Ironman. The dogfights look amazing and as expected from Madhouse the animation quality is top notch. Ironman himself though… I can see how they wanted him to look more like a shiny mecha but all I can think about is that someone took an Ironman sketch and applied the Plastic Wrap effect in Photoshop to it. The villian though, that’s a whole other story! He’s part Captain Harlock, part The Major from Hellsing and all kinds of awesome.
Wolverine really hit close to home. I’ve never been a Wolverine fan but this reimagining of the character as a Japanese badass is an instant hit. The mood is a lot grittier and thicker than the american version and will remind you a lot of classic samurai anime films, specially Ninja Scroll.
Bravo Marvel & Madhouse! You’ve made a believer out of me! How about you? Are you a fellow convert? Does this project still stink of american style? Is this a sacrilege against your beloved marvel heroes? We’ll keep you posted as the project develops.

First halo, and now marvel. Next year is gonna be a wicked year for anime! I liked the overall style of the Ironman trailer alot more then the Wolverine one. But i’m not doubting that Wolverine will be f’n awesome!
I looking forward more to the ironman anime than any of the others.
Wtf is this…
I for one, am not amused.
Way sweet. The comics have been putting these characters in different situations and styles so I’m not phased by Madhouse going crazy on them here.
Mmm… Iron Man’s looking hot, but Wolverine gives me a I-dunno-about-this feeling.

Ironman is gonna be sweet! Especially with the Capt. Harlock Robo badass villian and Fujiko with green hair chasing after.
Wolverine however…. kinda retarded looking. and that super mullet… i have no words for that.
i for one I’m looking forward to this… it wouldn’t be the first reimagining from marvel…
(*cough cough* Mangaverse *cough*)
but this looks promising… do want.
I like the iron man one, but the Wolverine one is HORRENDOUS.
To be honest, this does look somewhat cool. The only problem I have is that this looks NOTHING like the character Wolverine. I know that change can be good, but this is so radically different…I mean, this character doesn’t even bear any resemblance to Wolverine other than the fact that he has claws. Wolverine looks a bit different in every animation done on him, but they all look fundamentally the same. Wolverine’s general look is established, they shouldn’t have changed him this much.
I know this is a reimagining, but they went to far. Wolverine had an established general ‘look’, and they shouldn’t have tinkered with it
That’s been the impression for most people i’ve shown that trailer to. They just don’t like HOW MUCH they changed wolverine’s design.
I’m still giving them a chance. We’ll see how the final product turns ou t.
I dissaprove anime Wolverine with the visual-kei “rough ass bishonen” aesthetics, not to mention the overly slender look. We have lots of those on anime and making a mainstream figure like him in THAT way is something i find very untasteful. When critics or anime haters need something to chew on, they love to pin down material like this. Alas, they are, or you are, not minding that all. Not that you have to.
The Ironman adaptation looks interesting enough- but Wolvarine looks as if it relies more on action lines, and omits any real attack animations.
