Quick, drop out of Japanese classes, there’s a better way to learn Japanese now! With Project LRNJ’s game Slime Forest you will be reading and writing Japanese in no time! Or maybe not.. but at least you’ll get something better out of this than those other 80+ hour RPGs you play.

The game is divided into several chapters called Dreams, there are kanji, katakana and hiragana learning dreams as well as some reading comprehension Dreams. Its a work in development and the graphics are less than spectacular, but if learning Japanese is your thing, go for it!

    Best way to learn Japanese? Move to Japan and study like hell. But, those of you just starting and looking for study supplements, here’s a computer RPG called Slime Forest. It’s still a work in development, and the graphics……

    Well. I am a student and I played this up to the point of the second cave. The main kicker is the fact that the kanji, the same one can have sometimes more than one meaning, and they don’t give them a separate color or anything so that you can tell what the meaning is. Kinda Irritating.

    Not only this, but you have to put in the English word for each kanji. I’d prefer it if it had done by On-yomi and Kun-yomi readings and so on. Again different colorings would help. The savings could be a bit easier, such as saving with out closing the program. Sometimes you save so you don’t lose anything, right?

    Oh, and I agree that the graphics need a little fixing, however, if you really wanted to you might edit it. If not for the copyright and possible trouble I would do so. Luckily, it’s enough to keep kids somewhat interested. Not every character has to look spiffy! Although it is preferable. Sorry, long-winded typage here. But I thought I’d point out these things as they’ve been bugging me awhile.

    Good point: The Katakana and Hiragana sections are pretty fun, not the best, but more interesting and it gets you to read and recognize them a lot faster.

      It may be a good game for getting used to seeing and recognizing Hiragana and Katakana. It’s not so great once you get the ship and can head to the next island. There’s still a lot that can be done to it. The kanji, sadly, can mean more than one thing, and they have you translate rather than really learn it.

      I would use it up to the point of the kanji. I wish you luck on your Nihongo adventures! >.o;

    this is a fun game but once i got to the cave it stopped tellin me what each character was. I’m new and had no clue.

    • YuKi says:

      It is pretty fun. You should also know that it will make you pay more gold for each day you don’t play the game. It shall fine you >.<;;

      However. I agree that is fun, and helps you recognize kana quite well.. Again, I dislike the kanji approach that they took.

      But the point was, that in the cave, it would be a challenge to remember what they were yourself. Did you know it tells you in your stats just how many you can name?
