Don't listen to naysayers about the "Castle in the Sky" dub; despite the sometimes extraneous additional dialogue and the somewhat mature-sounding leads, it's nowhere nearly half as unlistenable as detractors have said. It has some good voice talent and a gorgeous reworking of the original score (approved by the director himself), and the story is still basically identical. The subtitles on the R1 DVD are another matter--at least in the beginning, the timing is a bit off, and there are phrases which are somewhat sparsely written.

Most of the other DVD releases I know of have the subtitles better synched up. The Japanese R2's subtitles are also good (from what I've heard), but warning--the dub on that one is not Disney's; it's a previous one distributed by Streamline, and believe it or not, it is absolutely DREADFUL. While less boisterous than Disney's version, the voice actors are nowhere near great (Muska is especially awful--Mark Hamill did a far better job IMO), and the scripting, while less chatty, sounds awkward and choppy. Don't believe anybody who says it's superior to Disney's--the opposite is true.

One other thing to mention is that Miyazaki and Ghibli have no issues with the Disney dubs--practically every one of them, "Laputa" included, were approved by the director. They don't think their works are compromised.

Spirited Away was pretty good in English, and I can't find it to buy other than ebay. Need to look harder. Also I am thinking when you say the subs are bad or disneyized that the translation is way off from what they are actually saying and/or badly timed. Is that right?

i don't mind the disney versions of the miyazaki films. even though with the dubs, they've 'disneyized' (yes, i just made that up!) them. so it's all over the top voice acting and what not. but it just fits well with miyazaki's style.

i wouldn't agree with this actual list. but it's good to see a lot of classics on the list.

So anyone know where I can get an official DVD of Laputa: Castle in the sky from anyone other than Disney? I just don't trust Disney with such films. I'm wanting to get the original one with english subtitles. I would get it off Ebay but I want to support the industry, otherwise I would just dl it. Thanks.

WEll, I think that new anime movies aren't necessary shit, just that the good ones tend to go into the "Too deep for ya?" style, preventing a general audience to accept and enjoy the movie at its full potential (Mindgame, Paprika for example).
On the other hand, Miyazaki's worlds, as surreal as they can be, tend into that more user-friendly style, with not so deep storytelling and focusing on human emotions like friendship, willpower, and love.
