In a recent symposium held by Japan’s Ministry of Defense a conference took place and caused great controversy. Titled “Towards The Realization Of Gundam“, it sparked a lot of discussion on the feasibility of an actual program to develop a Gundam as a defense system, however the expo dealt more with the development of technology which are used in Gundams but for developed for other purposes, such as a functional exoskeleton and better armor materials.
While the prospect of fighting with giant robots in space seems pretty damn awesome, warfare isnt so much about things hitting other things as it is more about building things that can efficiently throw things (usually explosive) at other things. Too many things and not enough giant robots says this humble writer.

In real warfare, the first Gundams would get destroyed like grunts by proven warmachines.
Unless they have a psycommu system…
Unless they’re trying to create an EVA unit…
But then the main component would be to have some angel DNA lying around, seems unlikely and still, power cords would ruin an eva in war. Now, building Lagann.. that’d be awesome.
The picture Nahu posted has been in the ‘Net for ages :p first time i saw it was around 2001-2002 or something (correct me if i’m wrong)
As for real-life mecha, the ones from Gasaraki still seem like the only reasonably real… or at least usable in real life.
Do I smell a black megadeus?
They could have just put that money into something else
Like the current energy crisis
Thats not how japan rolls. Who would deny energy for Japan once they have a freaking giant robot? (asuming they make it a viable weapon).
Did they have nukes in Gundam?
A mech of the scale in Gundam is unlikely, but with only a small defense force medium-sized mecha (topping out at let’s say half the height of the picture) can certainly be combat effective at anti-tank and perhaps ground-to-air. Japan has the resources to be the first to publicly develop combat mecha and it is a bit frightening. They had better not fly though.
well, i saw a article about a power supply for a medium size one was about 7 diesel engines i think, and was about 729 million yen, i think. the brain would have been i ibm super computer, i cant remember the rest.
