“It’s a bit hard commenting publicly on this, but the most popular comics on the mobile are adult-oriented ones for women” said Yusuke Nakabashi, a media consultant at Nomura research. It’s true, a growing number of Japanese women are getting their freaky boy love manga in their phones.

The New York times profiles the rise of the mobile phone as a manga reading platform in Japan, where last year mobile manga sales grew 43%. Out of the whole mobile manga market 70% are females in their 20’s and, you guessed it, most are using them to buy Yaoi. Apparently girls are more open to indulge in their boy love fantasies when they cant be seen buying or reading the stuff.

However, this can be a mighty useful tool for prospecting dates. Forget reading her text messages while she’s in the restroom, checkout her manga reader for yaoi. If you find some you might want to reconsider meeting that athletic and trendy friend she keeps mentioning. You know how she says you need some male bonding? Yeah, she’s speaking literally.

Glad to hear the manga industry getting a boost! Even if it is from cellphone yaoi…

  2. Enner says:

Does that mean we’ll get doujins on our cells soon?

You can bet your life on it; there are a lot of doujin circles offering their books in digital form now through online stores (hey, if I could find one website it must mean there are tons). Personally I love to have the hard copy, but you do get more people’s money with an online version.

We women can be just as nasty or more than men, so yeah I don’t find this surprising at all.

In my opinion a cellphone is too small to go around admiring yaoi, but I guess it’s more concealing than carrying a bag full of doujinshi and CD-dramas.

but were is the fun in just having it all on your phone? I feel pretty triumphant when I go buy some anime/manga and walk around with it.

      • yaku says:

I never said I liked it myself (I am like you, I like the have the actual book in my hands), but I understand why the fujoshi in Japan would want to use their phones to conceal their naughty readings.

I always have a stash of yaoi in my iPod. Seriously, if you don’t have the money to buy a cell phone, invest in a handy dandy iPod Touch. It’ll probably be the greatest decision you’ve ever made in your life T.T

The fuyoshi are at full bloom? I remember when most of the local anime-manga community was deplored and looked down uppon due to yaoi-fans and the noisy antics they played uppon themselves and unwilling anime boys.

In any case, reading manga through a 3G mobile surfing webmanga is difficult or uncomfortable. Perhaps in a more careful and practical presentation would be something a lot more people would buy outside Japan. In any case, woo to bshoo
