We all knew it was going to happen, but let’s talk it over anyway. Super Smash Bros. Brawl (known as Super Smash Bros. X in Japan) has debuted in the Japanese console software charts at number 1. But that’s not all. It’s old more than all 9 other entries in the top 10 combined. It’s estimated that a mammoth 95% of the stock shipped out was bought within a week.
Me = not shocked. Not even a little bit. Super Smash Bros. Brawl has had the Wii owning gaming community salivating over this game ever since Nintendo released the surprise trailer for it at 2006’s e3. Plus, Super Smash Bros. Melee was and still is the GameCube’s biggest selling title to date. To say the series now has a huge following and fan base would be a serious understatement. Check out the charts below to see all of the games that Brawl went and owned like bitches.
| Title | System | Units sold | |
| 1 | Super smash bros. Brawl | Wii | 820,000 |
| 2 | Devil may cry 4 | PS3 | 205,000 |
| 3 | Tales of destiny: Directors cut | PS2 | 117,000 |
| 4 | Haruhi suzumiya wonderment | PS2 | 114,000 |
| 5 | Wii fit | Wii | 73,000 |
| 6 | Disgaea 3 | PS3 | 55,000 |
| 7 | Devil may cry 4 | Xbox 360 | 40,000 |
| 8 | Mario & Sonic at the Olympic games | Wii | 34,000 |
| 9 | Assassin’s creed | PS3 | 28,000 |
| 10 | Word soccer Winning eleven: Ubiquitous evolution | PSP | 26,000 |
Word soccer Winning eleven: Ubiquitous evolution - what the f**k kind of title is that!? That shit is not memorable and not Japanese friendly. Shit. It’s not even English friendly!
I’m shocked that there’s an Xbox 360 game in the top 10, but look at the difference in sales between the PS3 and Xbox 360 version of Devil may cry 4. It never ceases to amaze me how Japan does not care about the Xbox 360. That console may as well not exist over there. Microsoft have done everything to try and make that console a success in Japan, but nothing’s worked or made a substantial impact.
In more Nintendo chart related news, Super Mario Galaxy has fallen to #28. (Ouch!) Nintendo never seem to promote their big console titles across a long period of time. They kick their promotion into gear 2 weeks before the respective game is due to release and once it’s out, they forget about it. Only DS games get heavily promoted non stop. Nintendogs and New Super Mario Bros. still have TV spots airing even now and both games are still sticking around in the UK software charts.
Even though Super Smash Bros. Brawl’s success was no surprise, it’s still great that the game was so well received. It shows there indeed is a large cross section of Wii owners who are hardcore gamers. It’d be great if Nintendo pushed this more. With 820,000 gamers snatching the game up on release and no doubt heading for some online Brawling from the word go, I’d bet Nintendo’s Wi-Fi servers got raped and are still being raped right now.

The only thing I’m amazed is the fact taht Haruhi Suzumiya Wonderment is in fourth place.
God, too bad I don’t have the resources to mod my PS2 to play that.
Im starting to wonder how hard it will be for us to get our hands on this game.. Hopefully not 6 months, like it took me to get the Wii.
If you live in Europe or Australia, you’re probably looking at 6 months.
:(
But if you’re in the US you’ll probably be able to walk into a store and buy it. Nintendo usually deliver when it comes to quantities of software - it’s the hardware they struggle to get out. I’d still warn against complacency though. Pre-order either in-store or online right now if you can. Just to cover yourself.
