Coming by way of Gaijin, mathematician Robert Lang discusses real world applications for origami. At 18 minutes it may appear long, but it gives you an interesting look at how seemingly simple concepts can be applied to solve complex problems.
You can also use his freely available software to design origami of your own. If your really up for a challenge send us your best Dark Diamond.

amazing… this changed the way I think about folding the laundry
I am not sure if people laughed at disbelief, heckle or something else. In any case, i found it (the speech) kind of short, maybe because it had to make some introductory talk to origami and later explain how is beign used as of now.
Was this speech delivered at some university or elsewhere?
i laughed cause i got the humor in it.. and i’m sure all the nerds sitting in on the lecture did as well xD
TED is a conference where the thinkers and doers of the world share ideas.
This was a really interesting presentation. It’s amazing what can be done with a single sheet of paper.
I recommend checking out the software. I plan on going on vacation and trying out my folding skills for that preying mantis.
Very cool~
I wish I can do Origami flawlessly as that guy, he’s now my hero. :3
The only “artistic” thing I can do so far is Mech building, but I doubt that can save lives..
unless someone’s arm can be attached together and painted easily.
i can’t believe i just sat through that whole speach. but once he started talking i was HOOKED.
i used to be huuuuuuuuuuge into origami when i was younger. constantly learning new patterns, designs, methods, etc. and after watching this vid, i almost want to get back into it just for the heck of it.
great post!
WOW I didn’t know that it was so easy to create origami, I want to give it a try to the Cimarron
