As The Escapist explains, “in this day and age scores under 80 are generally considered poor.” I’d say that’s stretching the truth, but in the case of a hugely anticipated game like Spore (almost forecasted to be a cultural event), the Gamestar score of 79 and PC Games score of 73 stand out as expressions of disappointment.
While those two German mags somewhat agreed on their evaluations of the game, PC Gamer UK instead decided to award it a more predictable 91. It seems like the more money the video games industry makes, the more upcoming games get hyped, which thus leads to an ever-growing number of disappointments in the wake of unrealistic expectations. On the other hand, you could also look at things this way: reviewers aren’t afraid to be honest and have decided to get tougher on games than they used to be, which is a good way to make developers competitive rather than complacent.
