In either a colossal screw-up by retailers everywhere or a very sneaky release date bump by Atlus, Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard is now appearing on shelves in North America. Copies have been sighted as early as yesterday, giving this a 4-day early release. Atlus’ last newsletter and the official site still have this listed as a June 17th release.
If you enjoy dungeon crawling and more than a fair share of challenge, be sure to pick it up! Most Gamestop locations aren’t getting many more than the amount to cover their pre-orders!

I just got this game. I’ll give it more of a review after I fool around with it this weekend.
I got this game knowing it was going to be a pretty extensive dungeon crawling experience. Along with creating your own map, you can fully customize your own team from the start (11 starting classes with 1 unlockable) with many skill trees to explore. This game is really fun and ridiculously hard. Be prepared to die many times. The music and graphics are pretty basic, but they fit in the context of the game. There is a save map feature which really helps keep each place you’ve explored before death. Etrian took me back to my childhood playing a game called Dungeon Master on an Amiga (my first computer).
Final thoughts? I agree with Taco, get this game if you want a challenge. You will spend a lot of time leveling your party just to explore the same map. The learning curve is steep, but the experience (while frustrating) is incredibly fun if you are willing to put in the time.
