E3 07: The SONY Blunder

This is a 4 part series, talking about the 3 Big console conferences, and then my overall thoughts.

(Quick Disclaimer: My thoughts on www.destructoid.com are my own personal opinion, and in no way reflect the feeling of the rest of the staff here at www.darkdiamond.net)

Today, I’m starting with what was the worst of the 3 Conferences: SONY

So it started off with footage of several trailers and stuff… the went to home… BORING!(for the record, we may have missed about 5 or 6 minutes of the conference… gamespot were being asses, and didn’t put it online til then.) Then Sony, not learning from past mistake had to say “RIDDDDDDDDDGE RACCCCER!” again… idiots.

They unveiled a new psp light, it fails hard… no dual analog. I have a psp myself, but spend about 98% of the time on it not actually playing a psp game.

Eventually they had Lex Luthor come out, and present some new games, 1 of them being Echochrome which is 1 of Sony’s most original and impressive titles. They then went on to show several other trailers, of which none of them I cared enough about.

They continued on with the Conference, with Chewbacca eventually coming out. He showed us a new White psp, with darth vader on the back… I actually sort of liked the look of it.

Eventually they threw us into more trailers, 1 of them being called “infamous” which actually blew my mind a little. It’s just seems like a great title… however not a title that I’d end up spending 599Us dollars… Which leads me to the next point.

They slashed the 60GB version by 100$ making it 499USD… then introducing the new 80gb and then said the other line that everyone mocked them on… again “599 Dollars”. Anyways, if the 60/20 gb is to show anything, the 60 gb will probably be taken off the market, and just leave the 80gb for 599$… meaning still no sales.

They eventually talked about Ratchet and Clank… I put that in the list of franchises that really needs to die.

Hideo Kojima then came out, adding more fuel to the fire of 360 MGS4 rumors by saying ” Metalgearsolid 4 will be available only on ps3 next year.” which to me sounds like he’s saying only next year.. what about the year after that Mr.Kojima?

I’m not quite sure what happened next… I think I may have snored abit. I’ve never ever been as bored as I was watching this conference… well maybe once while watching a horrible chick flicks from the 60’s… but still.

People are saying that sony showed alot of interesting trailers… All the trailers were either extremely generic games, or they were games that were none exclusive to the PS3… it just failed hard.

By the way, Destructoid.com are all a bunch of idiots, they claimed sony as the winners of the conference. BULLSHIT! they call themselves the blog of the hardcore, I call them the blog of the 1337. Fuck destructoid.

Editor note: This is the opinion of the writer, not the whole staff, I’m fond of Destructoid myself.

Stay tuned later on for part 2: The microsoft inaccuracies.

First, I’m not a Sony fanboy, or a hater of Microsoft or Nintendo.
I am, however, sick of all these negative comments about Sony. Yes there are some very clear problems with the way things are being run but it’s a great system and it’s got great games coming out for it. The 360 didn’t get a game of Resistance: FOM’s caliper until GOW which was long after launch. I’m not saying Sony’s not taking a long time to come out with good games that’ll make the purchase worth it, but they’re going the same pace as Nintendo and Microsoft which is what most people seem to be forgetting. The only arguable complaint against Sony is their PR department and their horrible advertising. Other than that there’s really nothing to be said.
Lastly, I own all three systems so I have every right to judge them each. I’m so fed up with people that only have one system hating on the other two just because they want to make themselves feel like they made the best purchase. They’re all 3 great systems, all with ups and downs equally, and I spend my time equally on all three because they’ve all got something different to offer.
The Wii’s cheap and that’s why most people buy it (you can’t deny that) and it’s got good games (however poor the graphics may be), but the controller is just a gimmick much like the DS. Waving a controller around only to see your character make attacks nothing like the movements you made to initiate them gives little more immersiveness than a regular PS or Xbox controller.
The Xbox 360, as is well known by now, has an unforgivable failure percentage. What’s even more stupid is when an official firmware upgrade bricks your system (my original 360 started having problems running certain games last year just before the big fall update but I learned to ignore it and then the firmware update came and my system was completely bricked, luckily they fixed it for free). I’m lucky to only be on my second 360. Many of my friends are currently on their fourth or fifth. Aside from the hardware problems though, the 360 only really does well with it’s online service, and that’s understandable because they’re the only ones that make you pay for online. Every other aspect of the system is just mediocre. In order to get remotely close to the same experience as you can have with a PS3 you have to spend another $100 on a wireless adapter, $100 on a bigger hard drive, and $200 on a HD DVD drive. Do the math; $400 on initial purchase of system + another $400 to even be able to compare to what the ps3 has in it = $800. Now which system is the cheaper of the two again? Then you’ve got to take into account that HD DVD is on the decline. Most studios now are siding with Blu-ray which means that your HD DVD drive will be obsolete in a few years anyway (porn no longer controls the market now that it’s free on the internet).
In closing, I previously stated I’m no Sony fanboy and then I dissed on the other two systems. I did this because I’m sick of the PS3 getting pushed around so much for no apparent reason. So since everyone else is hating on PS3 I thought I’d do the opposite and present an opinion in favor of it. I do quite enjoy the other two sytems but I hate when things get bashed on for no reason. So think what you want but if you’ve got no other reason than your own opinion for hating on something then keep it to yourself.

  2. There is more to wii’s phenomenon then just the price point. I believe Saturo Iwata said it best by saying “The price point doesn’t matter, take the iphone for example, thats a product I believe will sell very well because people feel attached to it, they feel like they are part of a larger community.” or something along those lines, and I think that’s weighing in a large factor on macs recent success.

Now that you compare the wii line up to the ps3 line up is completely laughable, what EXCLUSIVE games does the ps3 have coming out this fall? Well as far as the wii, theres Brawl, Galaxy, Prime 3 corruption, Bwii, NiGHTS, No More Heroes (that last 1 is thrown in because thats currently a must buy I’m waiting for.) Plus the wii has had some must buys that came out over the last 6 months, 1 of them being at launch (twilight.)

My biggest problem with the 360 is the failing of the hardware, I know many people who have gone through many 360’s… and now microsoft’s excuse is just bullshit “surge protectors” will not cause a system to fail, or else it wouldn’t be FCC approved.

Now for your whole argument about all the 360 add ons… well you can argue that, but your run of the mill gamer won’t need all that added crap. Plus, blu-ray players prices are on the decline, and soon enough, and it will no longer be a sales point.

For the record, the Porn Industry is definately a deciding factor, whether it is online or not, it’s still a deciding factor, and just because blockbuster chose blu-ray doesn’t mean it wins… far from it. Considering that rentals have been increasingly declining in blockbusters recent history, they choose the format of disc thats harder to copy… which happens to be blu-ray (don’t believe me, please see the hd code, google it if you must.)

I wanted to like the ps3, and nobody wanted it to be a formidable opponent more then I did, for hells sake I own a ps2, because the ps2 had exclusive games worth playing, I just don’t see that on ps3. Their only moving exclusive is MGS4 (please don’t bring up FFXIII because the back hand will come out, generic titles don’t do it for me.)

I am sticking to my wii for now, I am also eventually going to buy a 360 when its a little cheaper. I will not be buying a ps3 though… Generic titles don’t do it for me, and thats all its offering me.

    I’ll keep this one shorter…

The Wii has sold as well as it has merely because of the cheap price and it’s appeal to adults as a way to get their kids off the couch and moving around. Nintendo advertised their system well, especially because they directed their advertisements toward adults. The Wii’s commercials depict families playing very actively and that’s what adults see that makes them want one. The average adult couldn’t care less about what exclusives a console has or what the next Mario game is that’s coming out. The fact is that they buy the thing for their kids and what they see when they make the purchase is the lowest price and active gaming. I can attest to this because I am 19 and when the Wii came out my younger friends’ parents bought them because of what they saw in the commercials and they later realized it’s a lot different than what they thought.

Nowhere in my previous post did I compare the Wii’s lineup to the PS3’s but since you brought it up. The Wii’s E3 lineup of good games is Brawl, Galaxy, MP3: Corruption, NiGHTS, and No More Heroes, as you stated. In reference to Galaxy, you wouldn’t call another Mario game generic?? Looking at launch titles and what’s come out since then all I see is Zelda (which is a great game) and the mounds of mini game compilations and gimmick games (some of which are good such as Rayman and Warioware). If you wouldn’t call mini game titles generic then you’ve got a strange definition of generic.

Moving on to the PS3 side of things. I would never mention FF anyway because I hate those games, lol, but aside from that the PS3 had Resistance: FOM as an excellent launch title (on a side note, Halo 3 stole the bubble shield idea from this game) and since then it’s been sparse, with Motorstorm (I’ll admit this one gets old but it’s still a great game) and only a few PS Store game downloads, with all the other titles being crap. The PS3’s E3 lineup of good games is MGS4, Warhawk, Killzone, Little Big Planet, Heavenly Sword, Lair, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, and Haze. None of these games mentioned are generic and all are exclusive with the exception of Haze which will only be exclusive through the first quarter of next year. Now quite a few of these games don’t come out in the holiday lineup, but they’re all coming in the very near future and if you ask me this lineup is quite easily comparable or better than what the Wii or 360 has got coming. Then you throw in Home and the abilities it will bring (not to mention it’s free) and I’d say they’re going to be doing pretty well in the software category.

Your idea of relating the Wii and the Iphone only somewhat holds true. The Iphone is and will continue selling well because of the following, or community as you called it, that the previous Ipod had. The Ipod became a phenomenon because there was hardly any competition. The Wii on the other hand has a very different relationship with the Gamecube.

I’ll not touch on the 360 subject anymore because I can see it’s been tossed aside. We agree mostly on this topic anyway with the exception of the add-ons but that’s a whole other topic.

Once again I never said the porn industry isn’t a deciding factor but merely that it’s lost the majority of it’s power in controlling the market.

All I’m saying is don’t write off the PS3 so early in the game. I’m sick of everyone treating it like a piece of garbage when clearly it’ll be holding it’s own quite soon. You enjoy your Wii, and I’ll enjoy all three.

P.S. Before you try to throw the assumption that I’m a kid that has his parents buy everything for him in my face I’d better mention that although I’m just 19 I’m moved out and on my own. I bought all three systems on my own because they all have something great to offer. Haha, so much for short.

I liked Microsoft’s lineup of games and feel they have more to offer in the coming months than Sony.

Sony has a great lineup for next year but not this year.

  5. Faithnaked says:

Also was the Destructoid bashing really necessary? It didn’t add anything to your article.

  6. jack_the_ripper says:

I never said I’m writing off the ps3, infact the thing that scares me is how much the ps2 and ps3 sales are similar (from launch I mean.)I just really can’t believe you marked killzone as a none generic title… you ever play the first 1? It was such a massive disapointement.

I also see littlebigplanet as somewhat of a rip off of viva pinata and pikmin… I don’t know why though, thats more of a game I’d have to play to see.

For the record, Uncharted: Drake’s fortune has a beautiful art style, and although I don’t think I mentioned it, is 1 of those games I’d want to try out. MGS4 is just a ps3 time exclusive, so I’ll just be waiting until its released for the 360.

However all the other ps3 titles I feel extremely “Meh” about. I’m honestly much more impressed by the 360’s line up right now. However you can’t say games like super paper mario, trauma center, etc. is generic. I’m sorry, the wii has alot of great titles that aren’t generic.

about the whole wii iphone thing, I’m not the 1 who said it, saturo iwata said it.

  7. Urion says:

My position on this: don’t buy consoles or videogames at all, just like i do. I just saved about 1,000 dollars or more by NOT BUYING this new kind of legal drugs. Damn, if you want to play new games, you have to buy even more expensive consoles! I’ll rather keep saving more each year.
