Dragon Ball Movie: Camila Sodi Casted as Bulma?

New details of the cast of the Dragon Ball movie were released today. According to Mexican TV gossip show Caiga Quien Caiga, the producers of the movie are looking to cast a few top Mexican actors for roles in the movie, which will shoot in Durango, Mexico. The strongest of these rumors comes as news that Camila Sodi, famous Mexican actress auditioned for the role of Bulma.
Should this rumor prove to be true I would do nothing but approve (unlike with previous castings) of the move as the resemblance in both appearance and attitude are an excellent match. Still this should be taken with a grain of salt, after all this does comes from a TV gossip show.

she doesn’t have to be fox is casting unknowns so people can identify with them and their dbz characters like daniel radcliff as harry potter. i am actually happy with the casting i herad hrio’s friend from heroes is auditioning for yamcha. guess fox is trying to make the movie with an international cast
While I like the idea of casting unknown actors, I think they should get ones that actually RESEMBLE the characters. Sodi, I don’t mind, but Chatwin? That’s just stupid! Also, R&B singer Mario said he’s involved in a movie that has to do with dragons and the last letter of the alphabet. Well that can’t be good. Please not him or any of his music playing in the background or credits, that’d make this movie worse than it is turning out to be.

She looks more Spanish than Mexican. She must be from southern Mexico. Honestly, I REALLY don’t see how this movie will be awesome. They’re making it into a high school-ish movie. That’s lame. Why was that weakling Justin Chatwin casted as Goku and why is Mario in this movie? This movie should be cancelled. If it’s as bad as I think it’ll be, I’ll boycott it, regardless how much I love DB/Z. Maybe if enough fans boycott it, Fox will think twice about making another embarrassing sequel.

Quantium is right, almost a big part of Mexican people has spanish descent,or spanish characteristics. I’am 2mt, Europeanskin. and do you know!, that is a cientific fact, that been white skin means you’ve a genetic dissorder! and that the correct color to be is brown-yellow skin, cool for asian people they are healthier.

Im really shocked that they would ruin a perfectly good anime show by having Justin Chatwin play the part of Goku, i’ve been waiting for years for them to make a Dragonball movie and its going to be a poor film if they continue with Chatwin, nobody wants him to play Goku cause he looks nothing like Goku, and i dont know if anyone else agrees with me here, but his eyes are too weird, they’re slanted. Anyway i hope they sort this out soon cause its going to be a waste of money in the end. No, I most certainly don’t think that. But Bulma should speak the native language of whoever is creating/producing/exploiting her in the media. In Japan, she spoke Japanese with no problem. In France, she speak French. Since FOX is from the US I would think she’d speak English with no problem. Thing is, I can’t find Camila Sodi speaking Englsih without an accent (as she does in the American adaption of the anime *which I suppose they’re going by since this is FOX we’re talking about*) anywhere. I can’t even find her speaking English period.
All I was asking is if someone can back her up by posting a link to show myself and others that she is ok for the part aside from looks (even though Bulma is pale as a ghost, but hey– they casted Jamie Chung as ChiChi so why not? *I personally preferred Stephen Chow’s suggestion*)

Also, if you grow up in Mexica and go to high school there, of course you are going to learn English. But if you’re not surrounded by it as a native language daily, it’s more likely you’d have an accent. Some people just don’t lose it (i.e. Selma Hayek and Penelope Cruz, although they’re great actresses.)I can’t tell how good of an actress Sodi is, because I’m not from Mexico and I haven’t watched her novela, aside form some clips.

The Saiyajins are caucasian.
Yamcha, Tien, Chi-Chi, Krillin, and Master Roshi are Asian.
And Piccolo is green.

Why would Saiyans be caucasian if they’re from another planet? I could care less what race of person they choose for this movie so long as they match the look of the character. Especially the main character, Goku. That’s where the casting crew got it all wrong. The guy’s a total wimp and besides the of his forehead and jaw, looks NOTHING like Goku. I’ll be so mad if people identify that anorexic little man with Goku, ’cause Goku never was some skinny little high schooler. That’s why they need to do DBZ movies in anime-styled CGI, because how many buff actors are out there that are you know…decent actors? Let’s see, the guys in 300 who are too old for this part and…no not wrestlers, the new ones are terrible actors, like that John Cena in “The Marine”…ugh! What a terrible terrible movie, probably as bad as this one will be.
Hm.. the saiyajin race is alien, and the best you could do was to cast for people who resemble their features. Most of them were bulky with thick eyebrows and always had a scowl. Usually narrowed, but not always, eyes. Some were pale, some were tan, and they had narrower jaws.
It’s sort of hard to put a race on the saiyajin. I’d say a decent combo of races would work bet, including Caucasian, Eastern Asian, and perhaps Russian.
Another reason I’d feel Caucasian would be the best way to describe Bulma is also because of a guesstimate on how much toriyama knew about races around the world. It’s RUMORED that he was racist, so there’s a good chance he would accentuate features. (Again, I’m just guessing.)
To the Mexicans who defend by saying there are those of you with lighter skin and eyes: it’s not that Bulma couldn’t be the same way. It’s just unlikely. Most of the world would probably characterize Central Americans with having tanner skin, dark eyes and dark hair. That’s the common conception.
As mentioned, Bulma says she’s “from the West.” When people refer to western civilizations, they normally refer to the United States and Canada.
I’m not sure if Carla Hool, the casting director for the movie, was specifically only looking for Mexican actresses or if they were the only ones mentioned in the media. I don’t mind if it’s an open casting call, but I don’t like the idea of limiting your choices to only the locals because they are there. :\
That’d be like filming a movie in the Middle East, and instead of looking all over for a perfect fit to a role, they settle for only who’s nearby, even if that means replacing, let’s say, an Pakistani woman with a an English woman.
Maybe I should’ve tried out then, since I’m mostly white, but like 1/4 Asian and I’ve been called Goku before I knew about this show, lol. Too bad I don’t know how to act, but then again how many of these so called ‘actors’ in Hollywood do?

The above is a link to a blog with the first pictures of filming from the movie featuring a VERY skinny Justin Chatwin, who looks more like the guitarist from Green Day than an 18 year old Goku. Goku wasn’t extremely buff like he was in DBZ, but at 18 he was still pretty darn big, while Chatwin looks like a complete wuss. I swear he looks like he’s got a little potbelly in some of the pics and also looks like he’s going a little bald. Fox won’t get any of my money and if you don’t want any more of their crap, let it be known that we would rather have an anime-style cgi Dragon Ball Z movie than this crap.

Justin looks very similar in many ways to Goku, small nose and they made his ears stick out quite a bit for the role. The issue with the movie will not be who plays what, well maybe Emmy Rossum as Bulma wasn’t the best choice, but the bigger Issue is that the writing is very weak, teenage demographic, etc.
I just finished wrapping a bunch of scenes early this morning and ther is a lot I like a quite a lot I don’t. Who knows though, perhaps the special effects, some of which I have seen already, will be good enough to make the film enjoyable.
To “Is in the movie”
Justin doesn’t look like Goku from the scenes I’ve seen. I don’t count facial features alone, but body mass and that terrible real life interpretation of Goku’s hair. The guy is a wimp to be frank and is much to skinny even for 18 year old Goku. That and the targeting towards highschoolers (who aren’t the main demographic of dbz fans) is a bad idea. And I knew the writing would be terrible when they said they would rush it before the writer’s strike happened, so no surprise there.
Maybe Chatwin will play a younger version of Goku when Goku was a teen. Hopefully they will get another Unknown actor who is buff. Not freakishly big or anything but in good shape and size and LOOKS like Goku. I wonder who will play Krillin. Don’t you think this guy will be perfect for Krillin? Go to this link.

to about Goku: I agree that at first glance Justin doesn’t seem to fit the role but trust me, once you see him in the movie you will agree that he fits at least partially. As for his size I think thy ar pretty much ripping off Gohan in his teen years, quite skinny but toned, riding the bike, the whole shebang.
