DJ Hero confirmed by Activision; Beatmania: ‘Oh shit.’

Not keen on just outdoing Konami on Guitar and Drum games, Activision has officially announced “DJ Hero” to fully annihilate japanese rhythm games from the face of the earth (look out, DDR!). It has been in development for nearly two years (since shortly before Activision acquired the Guitar Hero license) and should be out next summer, possibly with the ability to face off against Guitar Hero players. I really have no clue what to think of this. So far, the soundtrack is all mash-ups, and the controller is basically a Beatmania pad, except cut down to three buttons and an SFX switch added. It could go either way at this point, so keep watching for more details.

I think the pic sums it it up perfectly. As much as i hate to say it, this will probably be a hit due to the facts that A) Konami doesn’t seem to care about the Bemani brand on American consoles with the exception of DDR and B) rabid 12 year old Guitar Hero fanboys will snatch this up just to try it.

Konami has essentially left us out in the cold. Even though both IIDX and Guitar Freaks both are on their 16th versions, we’ve only seen one iteration of IIDX here and it was a pretty bad showing.

I’ll wait for actual controller pics and song list before casting my final judgement. As of right now, I’m picturing epic fail. 3 keys and a SFX “switch”? It sounds like I could play this one handed. Mash-ups? DO NOT WANT! If it’s not DnB, Trance, Hardcore, or some genre of electronica, or Hip-Hop then they can shove what ever song list they have brewing. There’s already one Joe Hahn in this world, we don’t need any more.

Ever heard of ITG? It was the American (and shockingly good) ripoff of DDR…that died because Konami sued the developer. In this case, looking at the article, the game might be different enough to avoid litigation, but we’ll see. The emphasis is more on scratching than on tapping, which might be fun.

UGHHH! Beatmania was the shit, and now Activision is going to ruin yet another one of these wonderful Japanese games. I hope Beatmania makes a comeback somehow, maybe with the release of the IIDX sequel or something they can come out with new games/pads.
Oh and 3 keys and an SFX switch, wtf. I agree with digispa, you could probably play it one-handed.

While I like a lot of these Najica Blitz opening is still one of my favourites.

Oops wrong tab! This looks like it could be a pretty fun game depending on how much time is paid to the overall experience and difficulty curves.

Have you even played Guitar Freaks or Drummania?
