For those of you who didn’t already know, it may already be a big enough bombshell to tell you that Disgaea 3 is going to implement microtransactions in the first place. The first one, already released, was a free pack that gave players access to ten playable “gentlemen.” The next one will come out June 27, and subsequent packs will be released once per month until January, each for only 100 yen!
Unfortunately there is no exact schedule available, but we can expect to see the following things: an extra character in June, a new ranking system in late summer or fall, and new scenarios in the winter. As of this time there is no US schedule or pricing information. Sounds like a great idea for expanding games that are already banking on longevity as their main selling point. Hopefully we’ll continue to see more of this kind of thing in the RPG genre.

This is ridiculous. It’s Horse Armor all over again. Either spend the extra development time to put those things in the game in the first place, or cut them and use that time to work on the next game. I don’t want to be milked for my money.
Oh but we make such pretty cows for game companies. There’s really no incentive to stop doing it
The game already has a ludicrous amount of content, and the extra stuff is dirt cheap in the JP version at least. I say, let them do it to make back some money lost by pirates. While in this case the updates are sadly all planned in advance, it would be nice to see console games get more content updates in the following year or two after release (as long as the initial content is enough).
