Cosplayers Unite To Fight Abuse
Sunday 4 November 2007 @ 12:39 am | By Ivan 'Nahu' Lozano 5 CommentsFollowing the recent trend of otaku, and specifically cosplayer abuse in recent years in Japan, a group of concerned cosplayers have formed Japan’s first non-profit organization to promote cosplay culture, foment understanding of cosplaying and counsel those cosplayers who have been victims of abuse.
Its no wonder that with the recent fascination the mainstream has had over otaku culture and therefore outsiders entering what used to be save havens for otaku and cosplayers, they have been victims to abuse and bullying. Cosplayers in particular suffer from stalking and sexual abuse, and it doesn’t help that a good portion of Japan still has that whole “if it looks like a female, its asking for it” mentality. So this guys wont take it anymore, they are willing to fight back, in fact I’m sure if someone is in need of legal counseling they’d gladly cosplay as Phoenix Wright for them, and that’s what I call commitment!

Hi. Nice article. I was not aware of those incidents. That’s a shame. Good to see action is being taken. Its about time for people (worldwide) to start understanding the culture and stop seeing it as a weird thing.
That’s crazy! I am a professional stalker killer by trade, if you need some help, you know where to come ^_^
really or are you messing around???
maby you could run unofficiall security
for cosplay places?
i think that cosplay is great culture and though im from canada i see a lot of that people giving you werid looks for being in costume while out but eventually they get used to it as for the assults maby cosplayers could connect on so internet group a remote one and have bouncers with a list for members then maby it will lessin the amount of abusers coming around
