Bryan Lee O’Malley On Scott Pilgrim’s Manga-ish Roots

For those of you who have already read the comic, seen the movie or played the game it goes without saying that it’s a really compelling story that grabs you and doesn’t let go. It’s obvious that the format of fighting several bosses through the story up until a big boss in the end is straight off taken from video games but it’s also very reminiscent of manga, shonen manga to be precise. On this About.com interview with Bryan Lee O’Malley, creator of Scott Pilgrim, there are a few interesting tidbits about the indirect influence manga had on the story.
t wasn’t like I had read a whole lot of shonen manga before then. (Even a Monkey Can Draw Manga) described the structure of shonen mangaplots kind of like it’s a shish-kebab, where there’s meatball, meatball, meatball on a stick, with each meatball representing a fight; that’s how it explained what shonen manga really is. (laughs)So that just kind of stuck in my head.
Yeah, that about sums up every good game, manga and anime out there. It may be formulaic but it works.

Like if it wasn’t so obvious… for us :$ yeah some of us would see it coming.
I’m still 5 vol’s short of finishing it.
Also, does anybody know why the film has only made 10 milllion out of the 90 million budget it had? Were too much free screenings the real fault?
It’s true, it didn’t do very well. It was very outclassed by Eat Pray Love and The Expendables, even though it was far and away a better critical success.
I’m thinking Scott Pilgrim is going to be another Fight Club, bombing at the box office and then reaching legendary DVD sales.
i see Scott Pilgrim Vs The World Reaching Cult status at some time.. despite its box office performance it will be out there in our minds along with other cult classics
i’m having one of those guajiro fantasies, of buying a 10-strong DVD lot and selling it or raffling it to help boost the sales :$
