Battle Royale to be americanized

Japanese cinema has several qualities taken from the country’s very society that makes horror/thriller films and storytelling crude, realistic and personal. American cinema has several qualities taken from the country’s very society that makes horror/thriller films and storytelling synthetic, formulaic and dry.

Of course these are great exaggerations but when you find out that New Line Cinema is planning on making an americanized version of Battle Royal I cant help but see the glass half empty.

And then you find out that Ed Neumeier (Anacondas: THFBO) and Michael Miner (Lawnmower Man 2) are to adapt the script and Paul Verhoeven (showgirls) is to direct it; well then I cant help but see the glass has crashed into the floor and glass is flying everywhere. The project is apparently trying to be:

An extremely Hard R – serious-minded Americanization of BATTLE ROYALE.

Well I’m not saying I wont watch it, I’m just saying I wont have my hopes up.
