Battle Angel Alita Postponed After Next Avatar Movie Or Hell Freezes Over, Whichever Comes First

Remember about a month ago when a few more details about James Cameron’s live action adaptation of Battle Angel Alita were released? Just a few weeks ago we thought we could see the project released sometime in the vicinity of 2012, you know, after the world ends and no one’s left to watch it. Well now that looks like wishful thinking.

Jan Landau, one of Avatar’s producers recently told MTV that Mr. Cameron plans to do Alita after he gets done with the next Avatar movie. Considering Avatar took a good 5 years to come to fruition and that Cameron isn’t exactly known as a prolific director it’s now safe to say we probably wont be seeing Battle Angel Alita on the big screen until at least 2016. Oh well, better learn to love those space smurfs with guns I guess.

    that just sucks balls =/

The second Avatar movie won’t take as long or be as expensive because all the 3D rendering of the characters and environments was already finished with the first film. These are just followups which will require less resources. It’s like making another video game using the same engine.

    • Yeah so give it say… 2 years. Thats 2012, then with Alita being in such early pre-production that’s another 3 to 4 years until it hits theaters. And this isnt considering Cameron takes his time with every project.

Now i’m wondering if she will conserve her big hair or will it get smaller

This news may not be as gloomy as it appears:

First, consider the fact that Cameron might not even direct the second Avatar film. He’ll write the screenplay and maybe have somebody else direct. He did not seem that keen on directing in his most recent interview.

Second, I did not actually see anything in that MTV Jon Landau interview where he stated flat-out that Battle Angel will be AFTER Avatar 2. Please correct me if I’m wrong, but I think Cameron’s next project is still being debated. Nothing is official yet.

Third, John Landau DID state in that very same interview that Cameron is very, very passionate about Battle Angel. He spoke more about Alita than Avatar, which is very encouraging. In the past, whenever these guys were interviewed, their answers were like: “Oh yeah, we’re doing Battle Angel… Eventually.. But let’s talk about Avatar and all the wonderful production details on Avatar, and how Avatar is going to change cinema, etc. etc.”

Last of all, remember this: Battle Angel HAS a script (and a good one, according to Cameron). Battle Angel has over a year of pre-production. Avatar 2 doesn’t have either of these things. “Just add water” Cameron said when describing Battle Angel. Let’s hope it’s that easy.

    soooooooooooooo disappointing… T_____T

Especially after how so much of Yukito Kishiro’s imagery and style was blatantly stolen for Dark Angel. Remember those promos with Jessica Alba on top of the Space Needle?

yep – Jessica Alba – live version of Alita. And no, I’m not making it up – bring out your Battle Angel manga and compare.

Man, i’ve been waiting for this movie for soooo long. I’m really happy that it’s finally taking shape. Will Alita be done after Avatar 2? Well imo, its not a bad thing if it’s done after:
    1. the more a movie is done later in time, the graphics are cooler / well done (technology advancements)
    2. If it was done b4 Avatar, maybe they might “rush” their production in order to get avatar 2 complete faster, as they know Avatar 2 will be a hit since the first one was a success :)

    thats my 2 cents :)

I agree with Javlon, technology animation overlay on real objects and characters are just amazing. Avatar had very little ‘robotic’ animation vs skin & skeletal creatures. Would like to see a more detail look a the ‘mechanics/inner-workings’ of Battle Angel especially her special attacks vs what appears to be insane unsurmountable odds.
