ARhrrrr Brings Augmented Reality To The Zombie Apocalypse
Monday 15 June 2009 @ 8:12 pm | By Ivan 'Nahu' Lozano 11 CommentsARhrrrr is a new Augmented Reality game design project from Georgia Tech and Savannah College of Art and Design. It runs on the Tegra, a new handheld by nVidia that claims to support ‘high end’ 3d graphics. Now, I didn’t know high end meant N64 era graphics, but the augmented reality portion of the game seems ingenious enough.
You play on a small 3D city simulating a helicopter ride, then you take out zombies that try and eat the few remaining survivors. That seems simple enough until you integrate skittles, yes, not only can you taste the rainbow, you can apparently also use it to kill the undead. The integration of everyday objects may not yet be Frantz Lasorne’s vision of augmented reality but its still inspiring. AR games come a step closer to the mainstream with ARhrrrr.
Now here’s my question. Why did nVidia have to make a silly bulky handheld for anyone to give this a try when we’ve got the Nintendo DSi which not only has one but two cameras? Is the DSi not powerful enough for those high end graphics?

Thanks for the coverage of the project!
Regarding the question of power of the platform. The graphics may look a little rough, relative to a polished commercial game, but in terms of capability, the Tegra is nice. The DSi is WAY too slow (underpowered processor, etc) to do this kind of thing vision-based tracking (which is a shame, because I would love to make these kinds of games for it).
Hmm thanks for clearing that up! It’s certainly puzzling why with AR being an emerging trend and Nintendo pushing for alternate types of gameplay they didn’t think of this when designing the DSi.
Or perhaps they did and the price of more processing power was just prohibiting.
Hehe, so the iPhone has more power than the DSi?
It always has. Have you seen some of the 3d it can pull off!?
Wait really, I always thought cell phone games were god awful. Maybe the commercials they showed weren’t all talk.. Interesting.
Wait… the skittles are bombs? then what are reeses pieces? lol
Looks like a neat idea. But i’m not sure how many ‘full’ games can come from that style.
Reeses dont go un-eaten long enough to find out.
very interesting.. and yeah.. i figured that the DSi was not strong enough to keep up with the tracking thingy on the map.. at least not that many elements… and be still a nice 30 fps.
the graphics could use a bit more polishing… or at least higher res textures…
but still its a great idea =D
now lets wait 30 days for sony to steal it and put it in the PSP Go xD
I can already feel my arms getting tired.
I like how this appears to support HDMI out.
