From all the games I wasn’t able to play as a kid but always had that strange You’re-Better-Off-That-Way feeling, Ecco the Dolphin is #1. I mean, a game about a dolphin?! What are they gonna do next, a game about women that grow so much you have to shoot them down with helicopters?
Ecco the Dolphin was released in 1992 for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. Ecco is a dolphin controlled by the player through a series of 2D aquatic levels. Developed by Novotrade International, and by a strike of chance, available to download from the Wii’s Virtual Console.
The story of this game, as weird as it sounds, is quite unique; in short, Ecco is: One of the last aquatic species from Earth, A Time-Traveler, and the savior of the world from Alien species robbing our precious water. Heh, I might give it a chance once i get my Wii points card.
Here is a very nice tribute to Ecco the Dolphin made by LitheFider; footage is from Ecco games on various platforms, from the Sega Genesis until its last sequel up to now, the Sega Dreamcast. Go forth, Ecco! And save us from water-stealing aliens!
No wonder dolphins were smart enough to flee Earth when the end of the world was near. At least they gave thanks for the fish. . .
