This week marked the start of the shooting of the game/movie franchise that keeps coming back from the dead. Yes, I’m talking about Resident Evil: Afterlife.
After the train wreck that was Apocalypse and their lame attempt at forcing a sequel with the ending you’d think they’d let it die and be forgotten but evidently that wasn’t the case. The movie made money and now we’re getting a 4th one.
What we know: Takes place in LA, with Alice trying to unite the few survivors in a single place. The film will be shot in 3D (hurray for 3D Milla?). Wentworth Miller (Prison Break) and Ali Larter (Heroes) have joined the cast. There are really strong rumors about Leon S. Kennedy joining the story, despite early marketing materials for previous films where it was mentioned that Leon was killed. And to top it off? Well, it appears that it will by no means be the last Resident Evil movie. Earlier this summer Paul W.S. Anderson, the producer of the series, stated that Afterlife would mark a “rebirth of the entire franchise”.
The film’s planned release is set for August 2010 and I’m going to go out on a limb here and say it will suck. Will I see it? You bet. But if the previous two movies are any indication of the next, Resident Evil: Afterlife will consist of Alice getting more mental magical powers and killing everything in a thousand mile radius by blinking.

After not hearing about it for quite some time, we’re finally getting news on the live action Hollywood adaptation of Akira. No longer is it under the production of Appian Way, DiCaprio’s production company, but under the watchful eye of Warner Bros. The old preliminary script has also been scrapped and a new one is in the works by Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus, better known for their work on the immensely thrilling and tense Children of Men.
At least now it feels like the franchise is under more expert hands. Maybe it wont be turned into a half-assed teenage angst flick with a Linkin Park soundtrack, which months ago we explained in the above picture. Children of Men had a fantastic script, mature and sensible, we can only hope some of that makes it through here. If said script ends up getting the green light we’d see the film produced next year and hitting the big screen as early as 2011. I’m confident by 2011 our CGI technology will be capable of photorealistic giant mutant babies, otherwise why bother?

Ok the first Dark Diamond movie night was a total succes, at one point breaking 20 people watching the stream and chatting. Now we’ll definitely do another one. Now its time to vent your frustration, post your theories or simply comment on your love of Mima. Maybe you are the REAL Mima!

Alright guys, it’s official: Perfect Blue is the winning pick for our first ever movie night. The stage has been set for a night of gentle mindfucking with this masterpiece from Satoshi Kon. Now all that remains is for you to pick the day! This weekend, Friday or Saturday, make your voice heard in the comments and we’ll let you know.
Even though we expect to start with small attendance on this first movie night we’ll be getting the details of the showing and how to access it to our subscribers first, after that we’ll post it on the site prior to the start of the event. There’s a cap on the amount of viewers we can have so it will be first come first serve. Subscribe to the site if you haven’t to secure the access info early.

Ok kids we’re trying something new this time! If you’re in school you probably just went back to classes and between all that studying and partying staying indoors on the internet, if you work you’re probably stressed to hell. So we’re going to get a bit more social in here and watch a movie together, like friends. Now, don’t you worry about how or why or having the MPAA on our asses. Leave the magic to us.
For now just pick your favorite from the poll below and soon we’ll announce the winning title and more info about when and how. After this first one we’ll be counting on you for recommendations but for now… we’re sticking to a few classics.

It’s obvious we’ll start small but we’re hoping to make a tradition out of this one, so make history and make sure you attend the first one! Are you excited? We’re excited!

While Cencoroll is still the elusive white whale of the anime world it is coming closer to home at least. After showing clips at many festivals and complete showings at a very few select events, Cencoroll is finally having its premier in America next month during the New York Anime Fest.
Of course for most of you not living in New York this means squat, but there are still good news, the film premiers in Japan on the 22 of this month so the real american premier might be in your living room, once the fansubbers get done with it. It’s been a while since we last had a good anime movie so here’s hoping!

Its Christmas in July! Marvel and Madhouse just announced and released 2 teasers for a 4 part series of anime movies featuring Marvel superheroes. The first two teasers are for Ironman and Wolverine and I am all hyped up which, if you’ve been reading Dark Diamond for a while, you’d know it’s no easy task.
The films are supposed to redesign “popular Super Heroes redesigned and repurposed as emerging from the fabric of Japanese culture” and from the teasers you’ll know they are serious about this. The project is slated for spring 2010 and oh boy it cant come soon enough. Watch both teasers and my take on them after the break.

Here’s a trailer for a documentary called Second Skin, screened in several festivals all over last year this film tells the story of MMO’s and the millions of people who play them. Most of us have played them, some of us have lost a friend to their addictive force, some of us have been that friend at some point.
Second Skin interviews people who’ve fallen in love inside a game, found an identity they like better than their real one. Stories of success and community and of alienation and nearly suicide. The DVD comes out August 25 and it will also have a limited big screen distribution starting on August 7th. I am LFG to see this film, anyone want to join my party and… ok I’ll stop now.
