Slightly late news from the front. Friday Acclaim held a Mortal Kombat vs DC Comics panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2008. Velcor and I were there covering the event, we were promised a giant poster in the press release. We were giddy as a couple of schoolgirls.
Highlights of the panel:
MK wanted to do a crossover with Tekken and Street Fighter.
This game is a reboot of the MK franchise, back to a clean slate.
Heavy focus on the story, you get to pick sides in character-specific chapters.
New gameplay mechanics: Free Fall Combat, Klose Fighting mode, clothes damage, improved scenario transitions.
Jax, Kitana, Green Lantern and The Joker announced into the rooster.
Heavy hinting at Aquaman being there.
Mortal Kombat compilation announced for release on September.

Ah. . .The good ol’ 2d days, sprites ruled the vast infinite, Mario, Metroid, and virtually 99% of Snes and Sega games were sprites, no matter how real or 3D they. . .felt. Mortal Kombat was one of the first to go the extra mile and make it even more real, not like Pit-Fighters (Which in my opinion is a kick-ass game, too!), in which you had much lesser animation sprites, making players seem more like photo cardboards hitting each other.
Mortal Kombat was a pioneer for a lot of stuff: One of the first, if not THE first game on the SNES to receive a Mature ESRB rating because of Excessive blood and gore. I remember when I went to the arcade, Mortal Kombat machines were always crowded with older guys pulling fatalities and then laughing “Whooooa dude, look at all that bloooood. . .”, and even though we knew that all the subsequent Mortal Kombats would have recolored sprites of Scorpion and Sub-Zero, we always wanted to try that new ninja. . .
Here is a video by Devouring1 showing us the fatalities of MKII, enjoy! (try to lower the volume of your speakers, don’t want the neighbors to know you’re on a killing rampage).

As a moderate Mortal Kombat fan, ever since I got MK:Deception ( 6 for the ones who actually count the series) I was astonished by the fairly long intro video showing some characters babbling some spells and wiggling their arms in all ways possible, attempting to hit the adversary, the story mode with crap dubbing, and the weird 3-style figthing.
Now with their new installment, MK: Armaggedon, they return, and with a surprise everyone was waiting for: ALL MK characters will be in it!
On a side note: Is that a Mayan temple in the background?!
I hope they get all 3 sub-zeros in action. Ha! Take that, timelines!
