First Person Mario

Many in the younger generation would agree that the gritty, realistic first person games of today really show how silly and infantile the games of the 8-bit generation were. I think it’s the other way around, as this video proves. Applying the CoD style to Mario just goes to show you how cheap and tacky modern games can really be. It actually kind of feels like an infomercial with bonuses popping up every couple of seconds and meaningless overdone HUD elements everywhere.

SXSW Mario Faux Trailer

This year’s SXSW saw the debut of a little film bumper faux trailer that takes the Mario-as-a-drug-addict view on the Super Mario universe to new heights. The casting in this little clip is top notch, at least for Mario, Luigi and the Goomba; they are spot on, and I never thought I’d see someone who resembled a Goomba.

Star power as Ecstasy? Brilliant!

It’s The Goomba Stoppin’ Mushroom Poppin’ Super Mario Land Rap

As far as fan arranged videogame music goes Rap versions are some of the hardest and riskier ones, most are pretty bad. This Super Mario Land Rap by 8-Bit Duane is one of those little jewels. Not only does it span several songs, the lyrics had me laughing and getting a hard case of nostalgia both at the same time.

Super Mario Land really was one weird ass game as far as Mario games go, man now I want to play it again. Time to go looking for that ROM.

Dork Couture: The Mario Sweater Vest

mario-sweatermario-sweater2

You’ve got the bowl haircut, the glasses and your shirt buttoned all the way up without a tie… yet you still feel like you don’t look nerdy enough and you run the risk of female attention. What do you do? Well, you wear one of these! As awesome as this is in concept, I’d much rather hang it on a wall than wear it around.

The Super Mario Theme In A…. Laser Cutter?

Videogame music renditions is always cool but it’s not always exciting. Sure there were the days when whole orchestras getting together to play our favorite game tunes sent us on a journey of joy like we hadn’t ever experienced before… or since. But those day’s of flashy musical stunts couldn’t last forever, and so we find ourselves here. Listening to a hacked laser cutter playing the Super Mario Theme.

We’ve… come a long way I guess.

Love is in the Air: Super Mario Proposal

I’ve said this before, everybody needs a little loving. In this custom level of Super MarioWorld, fellow geek Brad Smith proposed to his sweetie Lisa. I don’t know him, but I gotta say he has some stones. As someone who is married, the question I am always asked is “How did you propose?” It’s nerdy yes, but awesome as well.

Inglorious Plummers: Mushroom Kingdom Meets WWII

The Mushroom Kingdom has been an analogy for many things, the process of maturity, the hero’s journey and even a communist allegory. What with Mario being a plumber, a member of the proletariat, overthrowing the evil regime and all. But Nazi Germany is one of those to which its rarely compared. The folks at Gamervision took it upon themselves to fix that by making this spoof trailer of Inglorious Basterds based on the Mushroom Kingdom.

Inglorious Plummers turns out masterfully done and Toadsworth’s performance leaves me wanting more every time. This could have very well been the intro to Super Mario Bros. 2, it certainly would have added a lot of depth to the game.

Hot To Make A Mario Mushroom Out Of A Radish

mario-radish

While an actual Mario mushroom can make you go crazy and jump down buildings, there’s still hope for your dreams of eating the iconic fungus. Ana The Red, an american bento expert, teaches us how to make this awesome mushroom replica out of a radish and some seaweed. If you want to make a 1-UP mushroom and wait until the radish turns green before cutting it… you might end up subtracting a life rather than adding one after you eat it.

Conan Discusses His Mario Background

This week Conan O’Brien took over the Tonight Show and it didn’t take people long to notice something peculiar about his new set. It seems it looks awfully familiar… those curves, those lines, we’ve seen them before. Well, this friday Conan decided it was finally time to address the speculation.

Oh boy, no I’m never going to be able to see it again without thinking about this.  Just like I swear the hills south of San Diego look like the hills in the original Super Mario Bros. game. Have you also seen games where there are none? I’m I the only one crazy here?
