Jpop is formulaic and predictable, that is a pretty common fact, we still love it and it may in fact be an advantage… of sorts. Take Vocaloid 2 for example, a piece of software that takes advantage of Yamaha’s voice synthesizer technology of the same name and lets you produce Jpop, custom with whatever lyrics and cliched melody you want, all in the voice of a virtual 17 year old Jpop idol, cue raging Idolm@aster fans. The results are pretty damn impressive, I’m just unsure if that’s a compliement to technology or an insult to Jpop.
Here are a couple Vocaloid songs that you are sure to know, first of the obligatory Loituma:
And the Higurashi opening, showing how the software’s interface.

On this week’s Otaku Music Bit we take a look at the music of one of my favorite new series, Darker Than Black. The music of the series is made by my musical crush of all times, Yoko Kanno. And while neither the opening nor the ending are made by her they are still pretty awesome as you will see.
First its the opening, HOWLING by abingdon boys school. Its a solid hard jrock song with nu metal influences, a good enough guitar solo, engrish and even a cliche scream at the end.
Now we have the ending Tsukiakari by Rie Fu. A nice Jpop ballad with vocals that don’t sound like 6 year olds on extasis. The lyrics are very emotional so look them up if that’s your thing. Oh and there’s a cat in the video.
If you enjoyed the videos then give the series a try, its over nine thousand times more awesome. There is also a cat in the series.

Welcome to yet another late edition of Otaku Music Bit, this time its the Hawaiian edition. Why Hawaiian you ask? Well because Hawaii is the only inhabited place in the world where its still Sunday and thus the only place where this posting time is excusble!
So for everyone in Hawaii, this one’s for you! This week we have not one but 10 songs, or should I say song clips. Its a really diverse video where Otaku conosieur and Jpop idol, Shoko-tan lists her top 10 anime songs of all times. The lists features many songs and series we’ve enjoyed in revious OMBs like Sailor Moon, Rurouni Kenshin, Dragon Ball, Evangelion and there’s even some Haruhi in there. Shoko-tan then proceeds to sing one song from the list, check out which one was it in the video!

How do you explain what being an Otaku is all about in under 30 minutes? Better yet, how do you explain it to someone who is completely out of the loop? Well you’ll need an Otaku crash course like the one Jpop Idol Shoko Nakagawa a.k.a. Shoko-tan did for a new TV show called Private Lesson.
Her presentation is absolutely delightful, she’s the perfect bridge between the normal world and the Otaku subculture, she tells it like it is. During the show Shoko-tan manages to explain from the correct spelling of the word Otaku to the different levels of Fujoshi and Otaku taxonomy. All while refreshingly authentic, no fake moe idol crap.
The final two videos after the jump, definitely check them out if you want to see Shoko-tan cosplay and act a whole evangelion scene using her cat as both an angel and an Eva.

Oh ho! This week’s edition of Otaku Music bit goes out to all the raving jpop fangirls out there. The rest of you, take cover, we have L’arc en Ciel incoming!
This is The Fourth Avenue Cafe, which was one of the openings for Rurouni Kenshin / Samurai X. Quite a lively song and vocalist Hyde is looking as manly as ever.
What? I know I lied but I’m not angering a fangirl, no sir! See you guys and girls next week!

As 2007 comes dangerously close to my timezone its time for the last post of the year! Let it be an otaku music bit! This time closing the year with a very special band from Japan. Its called 5strings and it would be your typical jpop band except all of the members cosplay while they play and the 3 female singers cosplay as OS-tans! See if you can spot a -tan we’ve covered in a previous week.
Enjoy partying the year away, I’ll see you next year!
