Due to the highly anticipated release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, many publishers have decided to postpone other notable titles until the Q1 of 2010 (Splinter Cell: Conviction, Bayonetta, Red Steel 2, among others). The full-on marketing blitz of MW2 advertises four different editions, the most elite “prestige” version sporting CoD branded night vision goggles.
Industry analysts expect MW2 to be one of the highest grossing entertainment releases to date, possibly surpassing Grand Theft Auto IV’s record currently held at slightly over $500 million in the first week. This first look highlights the AC130 Killstreak which rewards players with their own plane.
Still holding on to a Fall 2009 release, producer Steve Papoutsis discusses further details on Dead Space Extraction in this video interview care of IGN. He assures us there is a co-op mode where friends can instantly grab a controller and play; this leads me to speculate there will be squad based gameplay. Coupled with a high level of detail in the graphics engine and the uniqueness of Wii mechanics, Extraction will allow a more immersive first person experience than previous titles.
Steve also mentions the Dead Space as a franchise, now existing on every platform, a graphic and animated film. I’m just waiting for a fan made live action movie*.
There are many places we intentionally avoid; the boarded-up home or darkly lit alley. The places that when found make the hairs on you neck stand straight. Creating a sense of fear of the unknown and intrigue of what exists is the core of what Funcom’s newest MMO, The Secret World, attempts to invoke.
The Secret World (TSW) offers elements of character customization, skill development and item collection, but breaks a well established rule in the MMORPG realm; there well be no character classes or levels. While acknowledging TSW is in the “hype” stage, creative director Ragnar Tornquist states the game design features “fast, reactive combat” and incorporates puzzle-solving incentivized by new character powers and other unnamed rewards.
Without any real gameplay footage to review, the big picture is still rough around the edges. However, I have high expectations for this very ambitious MMORPG. On a personal note, one of the elements that peaked my interest was the use of occult themes. I always gravitate to horror genre for this reason. Check out the factsheet and some renders after the break.
