Videogames Squared: Classic Videogames In 15 Pixels

With every gaming generation that passes we continue to strive for better and better graphics, photorealism isn’t that far away from us, so perhaps it’s only natural that retro graphics are making a comeback. The folks at design group Alaskan Military School took it to the extreme though. They set out to represent classic games with just a 15 pixel grid. As ridiculous as it may seem, they achieved amazing results with a few, such as the video above which, if you haven’t deciphered it yet, is Street Fighter’s Ken Masters v. Blanka. Check out their website for the complete collection.

Epic New Street Fighter IV Trailer Fires Me Up

This just released new trailer for Street Fighter 4 is pretty amazing. Starting with an ode to the great 2D classics and then showing us some gameplay clips, it frankly makes me feel like searching for the nearest arcade in the middle of the night.

Also I simply love the song! Its so damn heroic, like out of a Rocky soundtrack. I must have it, anyone know the name?

Mortal Kombat’s Wiimote Controls

I’ve always wondered exactly how are fighting games going to be on the Wii. Its one of the few places where the Wiimote doesn’t look fit enough to outdo a classic controller. Now there’s a video of Mortal Kombat’s creator, Ed Boon, showing how the game will work on the Wii. Good news? If all else fails you can still use a classic controller or a Gamecube controller. Before I comment on the wiimote control, first watch the video.

The first thing that you can notice is that the gameplay seems to be quite sluggish. Now I dont know if it was played slow to give emphasis to the moves or if the movement recognition is sluggish. Fighting game are all about speed, a slow fighting game is a discount bin fighting game. You’ll also notice how they only show how to do special moves, but what about simple kicks and punches? Matches are made of 20 simple moves for every special one.

The jury is still out on Mortal Combat Armageddon for the Wii but I’m betting your Gamecube controller hasn’t seen its last days just yet.
