Nippon Ichi is making a 2-D sidescroller starring Prinnies!

image

I know, the headline itself is awesome enough, right? And look at how badass that Prinny is! It sounds too good to be true, but this ain’t April Fools, so I believe that this game is actually being made. Humorously titled Prinny: Ore ga Shujinkou de Iinsuka? (or Prinny: Is it OK if I’m the Protagonist?), this game throws some old Disgaea sprites into colorful new 3D backdrops.

It looks like you can collect sweets in this game, fight bosses, and utilize some kind of combo system. It’s coming out for the PSP in Japan on November 20th, and Siliconera says “chances are good” we’ll see it in America as well. Go here for more screenshots.

Disgaea 3 Microtransactions Roll Out in JP

image

For those of you who didn’t already know, it may already be a big enough bombshell to tell you that Disgaea 3 is going to implement microtransactions in the first place. The first one, already released, was a free pack that gave players access to ten playable “gentlemen.” The next one will come out June 27, and subsequent packs will be released once per month until January, each for only 100 yen!

Unfortunately there is no exact schedule available, but we can expect to see the following things: an extra character in June, a new ranking system in late summer or fall, and new scenarios in the winter. As of this time there is no US schedule or pricing information. Sounds like a great idea for expanding games that are already banking on longevity as their main selling point. Hopefully we’ll continue to see more of this kind of thing in the RPG genre.

English Disgaea 3 Trailer!

Here we have a trailer that sheds some light on the many new features coming to Disgaea 3, including a lot of silly-sounding things like “Magichange,” “Skill Merge,” and “Ignition Charge.” Catering to the hardcore crowd, the sheer scope of the game is being touted as one of its greatest strengths (you can reach “A million damage” and “level 9999.” Ha ha oh wow).

Also instead of the geo panels from previous installments there are now geo blocks which can be moved and stacked, making for some insane combos. And that’s only scratching the surface of what looks to be an even larger behemoth of a strategy timesink than I could have ever anticipated.

NISA Press Event: Release Dates, Delays

The Nippon Ichi Software America press event came and went a day early, rather than on the 6th as stated in the RPGamer interview. There were no major game announcements save for one DS title. The rest was stating release dates.

We’ll start with the good news. As you probably read a couple days back, Rhapsody DS is coming to North American shores. With a Japanese release date set in early August, we didn’t expect to see this on shelves until at least Q1 ‘09. However, NISA stated that the game will be in our hands as early as September.

NISA reiterated the August release window for Disgaea 3, also stating that the downloadable content for the game will be available on the North American Playstation Store as well. This new content includes new characters, maps, and story chapters.
