In a likely attempt to expand her legion of lonely otaku to the english speaking world, Shoko-tan, Japanese otaku idol (and an otaku herself) has started blogging in english. Well this is somewhat of an overstatement, as her posts are actually being translated by someone in the shadows.
In this blog she narrates her stay in Los Angeles while she appears as a guest at LA’s Anime Expo. Its filled with tiny tidbits of info and pictures, pretty much her saying how American cosplayers are so cute. This girl has Japan tied by its collective nutbladder and now she’s about to do it to America too.
Go on, click the link! You know you wanna go look at the pretty pictures and then argue online about how she’s your waifu.
Come and see the best, most remarkable cosplayers who attended ACEN 2008! Finally after days of literary fighting to put this together it’s done: a gallery and slideshow of all of the awesome cosplayers our ACEN team got to meet. There is some great stuff in here: ingenious, comic, sexy and sometimes near naked cosplay for you to enjoy.
Also, catch a few shots of the crew in some of the less compromising positions I could find. Seriously, I had to remove about 20 images of empty alcohol bottles at the hotel room. You can watch the slideshow above and then head over to the full gallery after the jump.
PS: Bonus points if you can name every song in the slideshow!
Have things been hectic lately? Do you need something to sooth you down and remind you this world is still worth having? These two lovely Gothic Lolita girls should sooth your soul. Doesn’t that just warm your heart? I think when I have children I’m going to spend an awful lot of money on wardrobe.
Thanks Godsh0t!
This is so wrong, so very wrong on so many levels, yet its so compelling! I shouldn’t be liking this, and neither should you! Maybe we should just keep it secret and pretend we never saw this. I cant unsee it!
Thanks WaryWolf…. I guess.

Bandai is running a little expo on Akihabara celebrating the figurine world and inside the expo you’ll find this badass life-sized replica of Sagittarius’ Armor from Saint Seiya. Measuring around 1.80 meters high this sure beats the crap of all those cardboard cosplay armors you see at conventions, hell that thing actually looks lethal!
Following the recent trend of otaku, and specifically cosplayer abuse in recent years in Japan, a group of concerned cosplayers have formed Japan’s first non-profit organization to promote cosplay culture, foment understanding of cosplaying and counsel those cosplayers who have been victims of abuse.
Its no wonder that with the recent fascination the mainstream has had over otaku culture and therefore outsiders entering what used to be save havens for otaku and cosplayers, they have been victims to abuse and bullying. Cosplayers in particular suffer from stalking and sexual abuse, and it doesn’t help that a good portion of Japan still has that whole “if it looks like a female, its asking for it” mentality. So this guys wont take it anymore, they are willing to fight back, in fact I’m sure if someone is in need of legal counseling they’d gladly cosplay as Phoenix Wright for them, and that’s what I call commitment!

A computer virus has infected your system, oh sweet Eris! Who do you call?! Norton Fighter, of course!
Norton fighter is the newest attempt by Symantec to win ground in Japan, the masked hero goes around fighting viruses in typical Japanese superhero fashion. Even when viruses try and appear friendly with their fancy emoticons, Norton Fighter never drops his guard! Here’s a video of Norton Fighter ducking it out with some viruses in Japan.
I suppose they forgot to add the part where after winning the fight Norton Fighter goes on to hog your computer and become paranoid of everything you attempt to do.
If you’re not new to Dark Diamond you’ll know that we are faithful believers of the first rule of marketing in Japan, that is, Cosplay Sells. We’ve seen it many times before. Usually its pretty girls in costume but there are exceptions to every rule.

When video game characters enter the mainstream culture they are usually revered by all and pop culture embraces them. They become icons, they become gods! Oh wait, that’s only if they are male characters. Female characters get turned into horrible Halloween costumes, such as this Juna outfit which isn’t much of an offence in the resemblance, its a nicely made costume but its such a blatant rip-off! And to add insult to injury the model looks like a whore, you can even see her nipples with that blouse. With no offense to whores out there but if you are peddling video game costumes the very least you can do is have a sexy geeky girl do the part. I know a good amount (you know who you are) and any of them would have been a thousand times better.
Then again, can I really complain? This 3wishes we are talking about, the company that made the infamous Peach costume, a pac-man bra and even turned a bee into a slutty outfit. Oh yeah, and did I mention they also did Chun Li? Oh sorry, Kung Fu Cutie they call it.

Two of japan’s oldest private high schools have been fighting for the claim of inventing the iconic Japanese sailor schoolgirl uniform. The picture above is of the first sailor schoolgirl uniform used by Heian Jogakuin, one of the disputing schools, and as we can see things were a lot different back then.
It was another time, a simpler time, long skirts were all the rage and freakish tiny dogs were like today’s phone charms. But time goes on and time changes things, usually for the better and we can now see how Japanese schoolgirls…
…have come a long way. A toast to the Japanese Schoolgirls!

An Xbox Live Arcade game so influential, it spawned a bunch of these pictures courtesy of Flickr user grumblefoot. And the game’s not even out yet. O’ Behemoth, why do you taunt me so, so bad? (Flickr link)
We’ve seen our fair share of Akihabara video tours, some aimed at foreigners, others by and for normal Japanese citizens who find the whole Otaku thing fabulously fashionable to know about right now. Next year? Not likely. But now Japan Sugoi brings us a collection of Akihabara shop tours by Otaku, for Otaku. Akiba.tv is a relatively new Japanese website where Akiba duelers tour and review the most prominent shops and even some hidden treasures. The videos are very cool, despite the lack of english subtitles.
Like this optician’s shop where not only does some random Japanese guy stand outside rocking out with a giant owl but a cute girl in cosplay will clean your glasses with care and put them back on your ugly mug. Which for any glass wearing male is about as awesome as it gets!
Rock on Salary Man, rock on!
Some crazy high school student in the Japanese drama Hanazakari no Kimitachi e - Ikemen paradise has only gone and cosplayed Gundam antagonist Char Aznable. I stand and applaud him, because he did an amazing job. You can barely tell the fella apart from the real Char. You really do have to squint and look closely to tell them apart. The cosplayer gets extra bonus points for camping Char right up to the eyeballs.

Oh. . .My. . .God! It’s the World Cosplay Summit 2007 celebrated in Nagoya (Japan. . . D’uh). Fresh from the oven! You get to see some pretty, pretty awesome cosplays out there, from Suisei Seki to a Delphino from S. Mario Sunshine, going through some Lucky Star, Bleach, and FMA, and there’s even a Power Ranger! (looks an awful lot like the racer power rangers, although this is pretty hard to be true, Japan dominating the Sentai area by much)
Kuan Hoong is the author of the video seen above, and I must say, great angle(s)!
And here, for some Mexican pride! Fellow Mexican Alejandra Rodriguez Rivera participating at the contest. Go, girl, we’re rooting for you!

Holy shit, its finally happened, they have created a real Hello Kitty! What has science done?! I knew the Japanese should have never learned about genetics. Oh wait what? Its not real? Oh, its just a mask, a really humiliating mask, at that.
Who-sucks reports that this Official Sanrio Hello Kitty cat mask is on sale in japan for the really reasonable amount of 18,900 yen (roughly 160 US Dollars). That seems like just the right price to remove any shreds of dignity from any cat. More pics of shamed cats at Who-sucks.
After the failed flash mob a couple of months ago in Akihabara, where people doing the Haruhi dance where busted by the police, made its rounds on the net a group of fearless Otaku ventured once again into akiba to repeat the feat. This time they succeed.
Japan is lawless now! And look at how many Haruhi cosplayers gathered up! Oh, and if you are wondering about that guy in a mecha/vending machine costume is, well that’s Vending Machine RED, a meme character in Japan, which is as good an explanation as anything else these days.
