iPhone Sweetness, Call of Duty: World at War: Zombies

IMG_0217.PNG

Last year we felt Apple’s chest pounding on the iPhone being the greatest mobile gaming device ever, was a bit premature. Now with nearly 100,000 apps and counting, the iPhone continues to be in the headlines as both indie and corporate developers further exploit the technology producing rich content and memorable experiences, although I’d add we continue to mock said statement. In the case of Call of Duty: World at War: Zombies (CoDWaRZ?), the IdeaWorks Game Studios port of its console counterpart delivers. While one of the more expensive apps, the $9.99 goes a long way and is sure to suck down your battery life.

The app allows for multiplayer over WiFi and Bluetooth, with a promise of DLC in the future. After I got it installed and played the first tutorial round I found the controls a little wonky, but you have the option of using the accelerometers in leu of the onscreen virtual controls which provide the feeling of more control. It takes some getting used too, but I know I’ll be playing this for some time.

You Lose!

Even When The Video Is Crap, It Still Looks Amazing: Handycam Modern War 2 Footage

Beggars can’t be choosers; and with so little gameplay footage of COD:MW2 available, I’m getting desperate. Enter Game Crazy retailer convention. Employees and retail outlet owners generally get to see games before their release, to not only help build buzz around a game, but also to help developers if they are on the right track. It’s not as if Modern Warfare needs it, being the most highly anticipated game for the 2009 holiday rollout, however for us gamers it’s always nice to be thrown a bone.

Your thoughts? Will I be playing with anonymous voices or our some of our DDN community plan on picking this up as well?

Because My Wii Needs Some Loving; Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare For Wii

In another life I wanted to be a cop...

It may be 2 years late, but Activision plans to release (port) Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare for the Wii. While this may be considered a late comer as newly released COD: World at War included a Wii version. Wii owners should rejoice at steady development of FPShooters making their way into the Wii library.

However, I remain spectacle.  I love my Wii and when I have friends over they play with it too, but one of the best selling points to Modern Warfare was the online multiplayer capabilities. Anyone who has played the Wii online, knows the frustration of friend-codes and ultimately the Wii doesn’t have the same technical capabilities to replicate the intense atmosphere as other consoles. BUT without any real information such as screens, pricing, or control scheme it is still too early to completely write this off as something to wring out gamers wallets. I await with cautious optimism.

First Look: Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer

Due to the highly anticipated release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, many publishers have decided to postpone other notable titles until the Q1 of 2010 (Splinter Cell: Conviction, Bayonetta, Red Steel 2, among others). The full-on marketing blitz of MW2 advertises four different editions, the most elite “prestige” version sporting CoD branded night vision goggles.

Industry analysts expect MW2 to be one of the highest grossing entertainment releases to date, possibly surpassing Grand Theft Auto IV’s record currently held at slightly over $500 million in the first week.  This first look highlights the AC130 Killstreak which rewards players with their own plane.

We have a World Series of Video Games?

Sweet. First poker, now video games! And it seems like World Series of Video Games(WSVG) is quite recent, too. It just began it’s first season last year, with six different competitions and six different events including the finals. From Dallas, Texas in the US, to London, to Wuhan, China! Last year, for PC they had games Counter Strike, Quake 4, and Warcraft III, whereas the XBox tournament with Halo 2, Project Gotham Racing, and Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfare for the Xbox were only available to Americans. Last year, the prize purse was $750,000 USD – but this year, it’s going to be $1,000,000 USD! First event is going to be in the Wuhan, China, and the second, third, and fourth events are going to be held in the United States. The fifth event is going to be held at either London or Rome, and the finals are going to be held at the world’s biggest LAN party, Dreamhack in Sweden. All of this is going to happen from May to December, so you can bet that this event is going to be big for those professional gamers.

And this year, they’ve added Guitar Hero II to the competition.

Also on the roster are Quake 4, Fight Night Round 3 (o…kay….), and the obligatory Halo 2, Counter Strike, and Call of Duty. Here’s hoping they skip the ungodly stupid Miss WSVG contest this time, although it certainly did provide some amusing controversy and comedy last year.

So for those of you hardcore gamers who want to make what they love into a professions, like those poker players – here’s your chance. Start playing, and start ignoring your obligations!
