Not keen on just outdoing Konami on Guitar and Drum games, Activision has officially announced “DJ Hero” to fully annihilate japanese rhythm games from the face of the earth (look out, DDR!). It has been in development for nearly two years (since shortly before Activision acquired the Guitar Hero license) and should be out next summer, possibly with the ability to face off against Guitar Hero players. I really have no clue what to think of this. So far, the soundtrack is all mash-ups, and the controller is basically a Beatmania pad, except cut down to three buttons and an SFX switch added. It could go either way at this point, so keep watching for more details.

Earlier today it was reported that Blizzard Entertainment and Activision have announced a merger worth over 18 billion dollars.
Jean-Bernard Levy, Vivendi chief executive, said: “This alliance is a major strategic step for Vivendi and is another illustration of our drive to extend our presence in the entertainment sector.” “By combining Vivendi’s games business with Activision, we are creating a worldwide leader in a high-growth industry.”
The merged entity will be known as Activision Blizzard, and taking the reins will be former CEO of Activision. Bobby Kotick. It is also reported that Vivendi will be the largest shareholder in this company.
What does this all mean for us gamers? Honestly, it is hard to say at this point. Blizzard has a nearly flawless record of producing quality game after quality game, but Activision is a little bit more hit or miss. Lets just hope they can both keep producing the top notch games that they have done in the past, such as Starcraft, World of Warcraft, Call of Duty, and more.

A recent post at website GameDaily BIZ showcases the “battle of the bands” between EA’s Rock Band and Activision’s Guitar Hero 3, hearing what each side has to say regarding the situation. As both games are coming out in the holiday season, there is indeed a lot to say. Frank Gibeau, president of the EA games division, had this to say :“I like our, Harmonix and MTV’s chances and we’re going to take it to them. This is the type of situation that we relish.”
The gauntlet-slapping continues as Will Kassoy said the following: “If you take a step back and look at what the game has done, it’s not unlike what GTA did for free-roaming games, or Mario for platformers, or Tony Hawk for skateboarding. It’s created a genre in itself, and there’s a lot of power with the mass market consumers and enthusiasts that a brand has in their mind, and that Guitar Hero has established.”
