Moetan

Whoa, a lot of things have been happening around happy ol’ Velcor here but even so I still manage to give you my most beloved internet babies: Well-thought, deeply analyzed, completely impartial, and last but not least, awesome reviews!

Even though Moetan isn’t to be taken seriously as a show, it still has a few remarkable things many of you will like; we’ve got lolis, cat ears, transformation scenes and even some self-flagellation by the staff itself on how bad this show gets as each episode is released.

Actas and Lantis were the producers of this 12-episode (plus 2 dvd episodes) masterpiece in the area of fanservice dedicated to the Japanese and all those who simply want to experience a truly moe overflow. Starting in 2007, only the studio knew what the hell they were trying to achieve with this pile of moe nonsense.  As we know, Comedy is the fastest way to get someone to like something and so that’s the genre of this series. Expect a lot if not all of the “clumsy high-schooler” clichés you have seen in the past 20 years because this one has them all.

A duck is a duck is a duck? That’s pretty deep, even for anime.

Obviously the story will never be a relevant point when trying to grade a series with these characteristics but, hell, just to let you know how far the Japanese want you to arrange logically random key-points for plots into one black-pot of anime: Nijihara Ink is our heroine and…as you guessed, is a high-school student with a loli body. One day she meets a talking duck and it tells her that he’s a powerful human magician that can do some crazy shit with his magic but not now since he has been put under some malevolent spell. And just after that…*BAM* you get the magical girl naked transformation scene for no important reason. Subplots in Moetan besides this one include but are not limited to:

-Transforming into an English teacher for your boyfriend.

-Befriending ghosts.

-Defeating huge monsters that appear right out of nowhere.

-Destroying the multi-dimensional enemy of mankind.

Well, there you have it! A lot of plots for this 12 episode anime; something tells me this couldn’t go right even if they had actually tried (and hired better writers!).

Best thing to come from this show: Manly duck.

As is now a real tradition, the OP song is representative of the genre. Like Under17’s style, childish and saccharine, Yukari Tamura takes singing to a different level and explodes into a 7.5 Richter earthquake of moe, destroying every last bit of sanity in otakus as far as the eye can see, leaving only those masters of tolerance and self-control survive.

Now, considering this is meant to be a fanservice show the budget for animation is expected to be top notch which, in fact it is but, only in what will be really appreciated by its demographic and that is. . .pantyshots! Correct! No more budget could be used into animating the frames and frames of the undergarments that act as a sad excuse for a Magical Girl outfit. Still, it is done pretty well and is to be commended. . .

Man, the mangaka really knows his job, and that job is: PLEASE THE MALES, BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY!

I have mixed feelings about this show. No, wait, I dont. It IS a bad show. I just want to decide if it deserves to be considered a groundbreaking show in the moe genre or, what I fear the most, a premonition of what will happen to anime in the years to come if we continue to accept shows like this. . .and we’re starting to see the effects in shows like K-On. . .but that topic will be approached later on.

Avoid if needed unless you want some loli fanservice and a duck you can see as a role model.

If you try hard you can see the duck’s red cheeks as eyes instead of his brows. Now the image changes completely.

Story
Several plots. Several characters. Several fetishes in one place. No sense whatsoever.
2 / 10
Character Design / Graphics
Lame costume excuses to show some skin, but kawaii in nature (big ornaments, cat ears, swimsuits (please don’t ask me why). Still, if the studio wants you to hail a certain scene or just even a frame, you will hail it.
30/ 35
Audio
Moe song goes with moe anime. Special FX not a problem.
12 / 15
Appeal / Moe
This is the show I’ve seen that has the most double-sense situations, lewd-looking but innocent poses / stills, and a more than desperate attempts to make the audience like something about this show.
33/ 40
Overall (based on a 100-point scale) 77 / 100

The Spanish subtitles make it feel even more “indecente” like you had to smuggle a second-generation bootleg out of a more permissive country just to see it…
