The Week In Review: Mechas and Schoolgirls
Monday 17 September 2007 @ 7:33 pm | By Ivan 'Nahu' Lozano 9 CommentsThe week in review is a new feature here on Dark Diamond where we writers and readers share what we did this past week, what anime did you see, what game did you play and even what fictional character did you fantasize about at night.
Jon Leo:
Well, as I’ve just returned to the motherland a week ago, and since I’ve spent the majority of my time meeting up with friends old and, well, older, I’ll just share with you the joys of a past-year show : Pani Poni Dash. For those not in the loop, Pani Poni Dash is about a 11-year old schoolteacher named Rebecca Miyamoto and the misadventures she goes through with her pupils, who range from the bitchy Rei to the batshit-as-heck-weirdness that is Miss Ichijo. As far as originality goes, have you ever seen a school-based show where:
- 1/3rds of an episode is presented as a top-down RPG?
- The teacher’s blackboard would have random sayings and change in EVERY frame in the show?
- The only normal character in the eclectic group of hyperactive and vigorious teens get blacklisted and mocked for her normal-ness?
- A larger-than-usual feline heats up canned drinks with its body heat, and just happens to be hiding in EVERY FRICKIN soda machine throughout the series?
Big fun all around for those looking for a spiritual successor of Excel Saga. I’ve also recently completed Phoenix Wright 3 for the DS. Just a small warning: the majority of the cases are longer than the ones in the previous installments, but they’re totally worth the time. It definitely wrapped up a lot of loose ends.
tskiller:
Well, this week was a catching up week for me. I’ve caught myself up on some much needed DJMax Portable 2, finally got around to watching the great mecha series GunBuster, and got some classic MechWarrior action in with some of my friends online. I’ve forgotten how much fun it is slinging hundreds of missiles, lasers, and artillery shells at your friends while piloting a 90 ton walking platform of death. Hopefully next week, with the upcoming release of Eternal Sonata, will be filled with creamy jRPG goodness. Oh, and of course, episode 25 of Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann!
Velcor:
Well, what a week Ive had! I managed to do a lot of things in the areas our lovely readers might be interested in. Lets have a look!
I finished watching Maria-sama ga Miteru Haru-. The second season of my favorite high schoolers (sorry, Azumanga girls) and their problems with their friends who are about to go to College. Watched episode 2 (final) of Hatsu-Inu. Well, now thats what I needed, an H-game-based anime that doesnt suck!
Played some Melty-Blood: Act Cadenza and beat Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike with Alex.
Played some Mario Super Strikers: I beat the second cup with Bowser, beating and unlocking Diddy Kong. I also played with a user named Sharon who beat me at the last moment. It was an awesome duel, would like to play again with him/her (it?!).
Nahu:
Well, like tskiller, I spent a good part of my free time last week playing Mechwarrior 4, I had never played a Mechwarrior game and I must say I’m hooked! It reminds me a lot of Freelancer, also by Microsoft games. Also managed to play some Mario Strikers with Velcor and get our asses handed to us by the AI.
In regards to anime I’ve been keeping up with Darker than Black which is as awesome as ever although I’m not a fan of the new opening and ending. And tskiller finally convinced me to download Gurren-Lagann with promises of orgasmic epicness. I like orgasms and I like epic stuff so, it better be good!
So, what did you do this past week? What did you play, see, read, listen? We’re running out of stuff to do this week so we’re counting on you guys! See you in the comments!

pani poni dash seems cool, and im always up for a spiritual succesor to excel saga!
well this week i have gone into being a librarian for a week! i dare say that that is rather fun!
Last thing you masturbated to.
ahem,
its battletech, not mecha.
big humanoid robots is mecha, just as wrestling isnt dramatic, its fake.
Haven’t watching any anime in awhile. Still waiting for my Wings of Honneamise (sp?) blu-ray to come in.
Gaming wise, been going between Bioshock, Heavenly Sword and Persona 3. Not sure how any human can handle that much AAA++++ gaming goodness in a mass like that.
This week, I’ve move into college as a freshmen, and I have to say, I”m already getting screwed before classes even starts. I’ve also finished the last episode of Lucky Star, it was sad to see the series conclue so suddenly.
BTW, Desfunk, how is Persona 3?
Oh college fresh meat! Good luck with that, and yeah how’s persona 3? Ive heard realy mixed opinions.
Damn right Persona is a triple-A title! Just got in on that yesterday. Basically, it’s a fresh take on the RPG genre, although there are times where you wish you could take full control of the non-dungeon bits, rather than what you have to work with. It’s still worth the 50 bucks.
