Retro Video – Street Fighter II Champion Edition-
Sunday 15 April 2007 @ 11:05 pm | By Abraham 'Velcor' Duarte 11 CommentsOfficially it’s Monday, so here’s some Retro Video for you guys!
This time our feature presentation is very special, a game that pioneered into what has become the standard in most games of its genre. Universal movements like the “Fireball” or the “Uppercut” originated from this game and, if you still don’t know what game I’m talking about (without reading the Title), you’ve got a lot of Retro Homework to do, baby!
Street Fighter is the name of one of Capcom’s most famous franchises for many things. For starters, the first time Street Fighter II appeared on the arcades, the smooth commands for special attacks like Down, Down-Right, Front + Punch made it almost intuitive for the player to make a relation between the joystick and his / her hand. Graphics were pretty sweet, and most special attacks had “voice” like “Hadoken” (that sounded more like “Aboooget”) or the famous Sonic Boom (which sounded a lot like “Alex Boom”) so we’re talking technology and gameplay here.
This video is from the Champion Edition of SFII, and the main difference is that in this one you can select the bosses of the game: Balrog, Vega, Sagat and M.Bison. It features Ken playing the last part of the Championship.
If you noticed the frequent repetition of combos and and the poor AI then you are OK. And one reason I put this video is to ask you to think about what you’re really playing and why are you playing it. It might just be me, but I love to vary on fighting styles with the same chars, practice different combos, trying new stuff, or simply making the difficulty greater so I can savour the victory that cost me what it did. So please, if you’re gonna always play like this, well. . .your call. Just don’t expect to sit next to me at lunch time.
Trivia question: Did you know that in the original Street Fighter II the pitch of the characters’ voices would go up depending on what button you used for an attack (Light, Medium, or Fierce)?

To me it is by far the greatest fighting game ever, and part of it is the control scheme. Flawless control will let you put together whatever series of combos you might think of.
And while control is the greatest asset of this game, the Xbox 360 Arcade Edition falls far from it.
Are they gonna ever release an Arcade Joy/Hori Stick?
Hasnt a 3rd party manufacturer already released one?
Nope.
And no, the MadCatz Arcade Stick does not count. That one is just an Atari stick recreation. Might be great to play Galaga or Pac-Man but nothing else. And even playing those, Imagine an Atari Stick with all the buttons of the 360 added to it… how am I supposed to hold that thing???
Final word: Utter crap.
Someone give me a couple million dollars and ill have a company ready to give you your controller in around 6 months!
Sounds like a plan!
I know a few people have already manage to build their own using the circuitry from the wireless controller and pieces from arcade machines (switches and stick). Since one of my controllers’ buttons got very sticky I might end up using it to build my own too. We’ll see.
BTW, I’ve just got the 3 red lights of death 5 times between yesterday and today… Dammit. Had to unplug and reconnect everything a few times. At first it wouldn’t read Gears of War then the controllers wouldn’t turn on the console, then the 3 rings…
Oh, to quote Chrono Trigger:
A bad omen.
Anyway if you do end up building your own take pictures and we’ll gladly post them :P
Of couse, whats the point of having a controller if the console is dead.
Well, finally got my 360 back from repair and guess what, in the short time (8 days!!!) I was console-less I managed to make something up with that broken controller. Check out how the process went at my site and see a little clip of how the thing turned out here.

Awesome SechoDB, simple awesome!
[...] Dark Diamond reader SechoDB, sick of having to play Street Fighter II on his Xbox 360 controller and allegedly inspired by this post, set out to create his very own arcade stick setup. While this concept is nothing new his final product looks much better than the rest, plus it has glowing LEDs, ’nuff said. [...]
Wow, thanks, glad you guys liked it.
