Among the very few PC games I play (and own) there is one that has a place in my heart, not because it had awesome graphics or gameplay, or because it was just $10, but because I had only played the short 10-minute demo of this game, over and over again, and the local Wal-Mart wouldn’t have such violent, M-rated game. . .until it was 5 or-so years old, dammit!
Sanitarium’s the name, and it features some pretty cool cinematics (for that time, obviously) and a pretty unique storyline. The graphics are all gifs, and you just use your mouse (point and click, Alla Diablo). The game started with you all covered in bandages, inside a cell of a pretty creepy sanitarium. You start to investigate the surroundings but since it’s a Sanitarium, no one is helpful so now you know that you’re alone in this quest (quest for what? maybe to get out of there, for starters).
The music is creepy, the graphics are also creepy, and as ridiculous as it sounds, you only “battle” once in the game. . .with a scarecrow. Still, there are many ways for you to die, so be very thoughtful on what is the next thing you are investigating!
This video is just a potpourri of some cinematics of the game, showing the oh so sweet rendering of mid-90’s CG models.
If I made a top 10 horror games, this would be one of the top ones. I really recommend you this one. . .and don’t forget playing alone at night, with your window open.

I’d really like to see some screens, see the graphical style they ve used on next gen, cos somehow i can’t really picture a GTA with photo realistic graphics.

What a FANTASTIC game. I still own an original copy of it, i think it’s somewhere in the basement on my ‘pc games i rarely play anymore’ shelf. One of these days, i’ll pull it out again, in hopes that it’ll run on XP.
One of my other ALL TIME favorite horror games, was Phantasmagoria, which if i’m not mistaken i actually GOT working on XP. 7 discs of point and click video goodness. Actually, it’s quite cheesy by today’s standards, but still a fantastic game.
phantasmagoria, huh? I heard about it, should give it a try.
BTW, Sanitarium DOES run on XP. I played it that way, so what are you waiting for!?
