Otaku Heaven: Hotel Tomo!

Hidden away in the heart of Japantown in San Francisco exists Japanese popculture inspired, Hotel Tomo! Its anime illustrated walls depict urban life. Balanced perfectly alongside its gaming suites, Tomo!, takes unsuspecting visitors to an alternate world. For the otakuo, it makes a wonderful place to put up your feet, relax, and game.
At checkin kids sat, eyes glazed over watching Naruto and Dragonball Z with Pocky sticks hangout their mouths; their parents close by purchasing additional Japanese theme snacks from the vending machines. My honeymoon had taken me all along the west coast of California and Hotel Tomo! was the perfect place for me to recharge after long stretches of driving. Luggage in tow, the attendant proceeded to show us our room. High-tech amenities such iPod docks and LCD TVs are customary in each room. The best part was next to come. I was shown my gaming room; the “Mecha Suite” . Hooked-up up to a 5′x8′ projection screen is a 5.1 audio system with a Wii and PS3 ready for play. This room is designed to have a party with its Fatboy beanbag chairs and large circualr sofa, but the rules suggest limiting your invited guests to 25.

My suite came with a library of gaming titles, around 13 games in total, however we had the most fun playing Wii Bowling and Burnout Paradise for the PS3. For single player gaming, I was drawn to Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm. I was impressed that Tomo had available so many titles, expecting them to skimp and just purchase bargain base games.

After taking a shower using the various anime themed soaps, I got all cozy my Tomo! bathrobe. We had a cold sake’2me and got ready to explore the area. Tomo is situated in the heart of Japantown. Navigating the various shops, karaoke bars and toy stores can be sensory overload, but the geek inside of you will not be disappointed. Should you venture further out in San Francisco escape to the Japanese Tea Garden at the Golden Gate Park. Nestled in the center of a forest of cherry blossoms, wisteria, and ponds filled with Koi, you can find a teahouse; which you owe yourself to visit.

I can’t say enough good things about Hotel Tomo. If you’re travelling through San Francisco make it a point to stay at Tomo. On the review side, the staff is friendly and attentive, parking is reasonable and the beds are comfy. If you have a chance to rent one of the gaming suites make good use of it. How often are you able to be in a hotel with the newest gaming systems and games you might not otherwise play? There is also a nice restaurant below the hotel which has great cocktails for the wearied explorer.
I was able to score some cool swag which we at DarkDiamond plan to giveaway to a lucky reader, more details to follow.
Special thanks to General Manager Derek Banderas and Assistant Manager Dara for putting it together for me and making our stay awesome.

Wait, is that the place with a Denny’s nearby. I did not know this establishment existed. Also, yay for visiting the Japanese Tea Garden!
We didn’t see a Denny’s in San Fran, but funny story in Napa Valley we did a wine tour and needed to take a short nap. We ended up sleeping for like 6 hrs and needed to eat some dinner at like 12am, turned out Denny’s was the only place open.
It’s the place you’re thinking of, but the restaurant is no longer a Denny’s! They still serve Hawaiian food, but, well, the atmosphere’s not really pleasant. I’d eat in Japan Center next time.
I still can’t believe your wife was ok with staying here…that’s a total keeper for sure.
I lucked out! :) More pix added to our DDN facebook album
“otaku” is never pluralized, like “anime” and “LEGO”
Really? I see it pluralized fairly often, but I’ve made the change.
Well now you know… and knowing is half the battle!
GI JOE
i… i…
….
It’s beautiful ;o;
So… perfect.
So… fantastic.
Like a dream…. Is this for real?? Hotel Tomo! should branch out to such a location as, oh, I dunno, saaay… New York City, maybe? So I can take a quick train ride from Point A to Point B, huh, huh?? You know what I mean? *wiggles brows*
That is a really cool hotel!
The perfect place to take your otaku honey for an evening of fantasy. :)
We are going on our honeymoon. I have spent the last 4 days looking at reviews and what nots before I book.
We went a while back. It was great. Everyone was super nice. The restaurant was really good. Was sad to find that the saki 2 me taste tester was no longer available. We told them that it was our honeymoon and got a room upgrade (not the game room) and 2 saki2me’s. We are going again around tax time for more than one night this time.
