Summer’s rolling on in, and boy is it a hot one! What better of a way to cool yourself down than to take a break inside and watch some of your favorite anime? Take a look at what shows you can expect to cool off to this season; Remakes, second seasons, and fresh new shows promise to bring something for everyone!

splash-hidamari

Hidamari Sketch x365 continues chronicling the lives of Yuno (Kana Asumi), Miyako (Kaori Mizuhashi), Sae (Ryoko Shintani), and Hiro (Yuko Goto), four vocational art students living in the Hidamari apartment complex. In case you missed out on the first season, the show is very relaxing and episodic, not asking too much of the viewer in each airing.

Akikyuki Shinbo returns as the director with shows like Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, Pani Poni Dash, and ef - a tale of memories under his belt, so you can expect the same unusual-yet-appealing style that was also present in the first season, with SHAFT remaining in charge of the animation. The Hidamari saga continues on July 3rd.

splash-slayers

If you haven’t heard of The Slayers, you’re either fairly new to anime or a bad liar. With the first season airing in 1995, Slayers has produced over a dozen prequels, sequels, movies, manga, spin-offs, and other adaptations. Each follows Lina Inverse, a wandering sorceress, and Gourry Gabriev, a wandering swordsman, as they wander with their ragtag crew and share in usually humorous fantasy-themed adventures.

Retaining much of its original staff and production affiliates (Such as director Takashi Watanabe, the lead cast, and J.C. Staff animation house), Slayers Revolution promises us more crazy dragon slaying hijinks when it begins July 2nd!

splash-strikewitches

From the mind of Humikane Shimada, the man who brought us Sky Girls, comes another adventure featuring little girls with plane parts attached to them. The designs are based off of World War 2 aircraft very similar to Konami’s Mecha Musume line of figurines. If the series holds true to the 8-minute pilot episode from last year we can expect a little action, a little comedy, and a little slice-of-life with the interesting cast of characters when the show airs on July 3rd.

splash-birdy

Tetsuwan Birdy Decode (Or Birdy the Mighty Decode, but that just sounds silly) is an adaptation of the mid-1990’s manga, Birdy the Mighty. Already given a 4-episode OVA that same year, Decode is a 13-episode run sci-fi action series focusing on Tsutomu Senkawa (Miyu Irino), a high school student who is inadvertently killed by Space Police Officer Birdy Cephon Altera (Saeko Chiba). Birdy brings Tsutomu back to life by combining their souls, sharing the same body.

The series is directed by Kazuki Akane of Escaflowne and Noein fame. A-1 Pictures is the studio in charge of the animation, and the series begins its run on July 4th.

splash-ultraviolet

Ultraviolet: Code044 is a science-fiction action series about the genetically enhanced woman code named “044.” She possesses amazing physical strength and abilities, but in exchange for these powers she is doomed to an early death. 044 works as a government agent to destroy the vampire army of Hemophages, and their leader, King. During a battle with the young Bacteriophage, Ruka, 044 cannot bring herself to kill him for reasons unbeknownst even to her. As a result, both are labeled as traitors. They are now on the run from both the government and the Hemophage army as they fight on towards a kind voice that called out to them.

Directed by the brilliant mind of Osamu Dezaki (Lupin III Movies, Air and Clannad Movies), animated by Mad House, and featuring the voice talent of Romi Paku (Edward Elric, Fullmetal Alchemist) and Tomokazu Seki (Sousuke Sagara, Full Metal Panic), this show is setting up to be the premier action show of the summer. The battle begins on July 1st.

splash-worlddestruction

Taking an inverse approach to the usual world saving of fiction, World Destruction follows a strange production process of first being an anime, then simultaneously getting a manga version published, and in September will be an RPG for the Nintendo DS.

In a world reduced to a wasteland and conquered by beastmen, humanity has become jaded with their existence. Kirie (Mamoru Miyano), a boy working in a cafe, had resigned himself to not caring about where the world was headed or how it was going to end. Around that time, however, a new cult, the World Destruction Committee, was forming to bring about the end of the world and making quite an impact on the human population. Soon afterwards, Kirie meets a girl of the Committee named Morte (Maaya Sakamoto) who claims that Kirie has inside of him the “Destruction Code,” something that has the power to destroy the world. Joined by Tobbi the beastman (Tohru Furuya), the three set off on a journey to end the world.

With the story written by Masato Kato of Xenogears fame and an all-star voice cast, we can expect at the very least an interesting ride. Seeing how they play out total annihilation as something a hero strives for sounds oddly appealing, as well. The countdown to the end of the world begins on July 7th.

There you have it, a small sample of what’s to come starting next month. What do you think looks good? Does the season look promising, mediocre, or awful? Share your thoughts!

An UltraViolet anime…..huh. I wonder if its going to be more “realistic” like the UK show or the ridiculous circus of a film that Kurt Wimmer wrote. I guess we’ll find out in a few weeks.

Miyazaki could turn my opinion of Ultraviolet (I watched the movie…sorry), so I think I’ll give it a try.

I cant wait for Slayers, its just been too long! As for the rest UltraViolet sounds interesting, always willing to see how a western franchise does in the anime world.

World Destruction just looks silly and Tetsuwan Birdy Decode looks interesting just because of the director.

Indeed, it will be interesting on how they make a story with the hero aiming for world destruction work out.
