This week marks the 20th year since the Game Boy first saw the light of day in Japan, and what a sweet 20 years its been. While not the first portable platform it was undeniably the first that got it right and became the father of modern portable gaming.Though the Game Boy brand is effectively dead since the DS line does not bear the Game Boy moniker, its legacy in the industry will never fade. More importantly though, is its legacy in the memories of many generations of gamers as a staple of our childhood and teenage years.
So let us celebrate and commemorate our old and loyal pal the Game Boy. Share with us your memories with the birthday boy, your first one, your last one, the one that got lost or stolen, the one that was there to help you through your darkest hours. Let us remember the time when the only color our adventures needed was green.

When I was 10 my parents gave me the only gaming system I was allowed to have: a Gameboy. I spent hours playing Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I was so intensely into this game that I cried when I couldn’t get past the swamp level and couldn’t get the gauntlet. I woke up at 6:45 on saturday mornings and would play in bed t’ill noon… Donkey Kong Countrey was cool too..
I think you might be referring to “Link’s Awakening”.
I received it back in the day, at 1992’s Christmas along with Super Mario Land 2. I still remember those days when Nintendo was almost the absolute ruler over gaming on Mexico and some part of U.S.A.
There is not much to say about it besides the fact that after playing many weeks, my sight started to deteriorate or something, and i saw everything with a framerate akin to a film theater speed, complete with grayniness, for a few seconds. This was the first gaming console my parents destroyed, lost or dissapeared from me. Years later, they would banish my Game Boy Pocket, the Game Boy Color, the Game Boy Advance and almost, the Onyx DS Lite from my kid brother. Last month i found once again the Game Boy Color we lost years ago! No baterry cover, though.
Ahh, i remember playing Pokemon Blue on my gameboy =3
That and Game&Watch Gallery, love that game.
Hey hey! Don’t forget to share your memories!
Fond memories of playing Pokemon Red and Super Mario Land on the Game Boy.
We should trade pokemon
i remember using the old brick as a loaner… and when i was finally able t buy one the GB Color was out i got the pokemon special edition with pokemon yellow included… i had several games and i used to spend days laying on the grass with a friend playing until sundown…
she stopped talking to me for a while, when she spoke to me again years later, the second time i saw her i gave her the still working GBC… later on she stopped talking to me again.. we haven’t crossed words since then…
laying on the grass playing games with a single GBC, those memories are priceless…
I remember y bought mine when i was 9, by then everyone had a game boy color, but not me, i had the gray game boy color with tetris… and not pokemon which was the best seller during that time
I remember playing tetris so much on mine, as well as Super Mario Land. I always got excited when I found a new secret or glitch in the latter. Then there is Pokemon Blue and Paperboy II. Goddam I love my Gameboy.
I remember getting the Game Boy Advance as my first Game Boy. Aah, such fond memories. Pokemon Ruby was my first Pokemon game, too! Yeah, I was late in getting it, but my little brother usually got games before I did… for some reason…
One of my fondest memories with my GB will be when I got Game & Watch Gallery 1 on my GB color (if I remember correctly).
I would be hours playing the Yoshi level just because of the music.
Good times.
