Capcop has being quite vocal about Resident Evil 5 at this E3. Sadly, as vocal as they are they end up repeating the same stuff everywhere. This leaves us with but a few new details of RE5.
As far as the story goes, we know that its set 10 years after the destruction of Racoon City. With Chris Redfield working for the BSAA, a bio-terrorism fighting organization. He’s sent to Africa to investigate some sort of biological attack that has happened there. We also know that parallel to all of this, Chris has been tracking the original virus used by Umbrella . Coincidentally, both events lead him to the same town, Kijuju, how handy!
Those healing herbs must be spinach, because Chris is giving Popeye a run for his money!
Now, even though Chris’s arms are now bigger than his head (seriously), this doesn’t mean he’ll be able to manage on his own. This is where Sheva Alomar comes in, the mysterious new girl in the franchise. Together they set out to kick ass and smoke plants (what do you think they’ve been doing with those herbs all along?).
Now this game is pretty much completely based on Co-op, which for better or for worse reduces the fear aspect of the game. The co-op dynamics alter Resident Evil fundamentally since now you battle bigger and smarter hordes of enemies. The AI, as seen on various gameplay demos Capcom did, is up to the challenge of controlling Sheva when you’ve got no one to play online with.
Another thing that seems pretty impressive of this Resident Evil installment are the destructible environments. From blasting a hole in a door to see if there’s someone on the other side to breaking in through walls and ceilings. This game feels very much like an improved version of what RE4 was. Sadly for those with only a Wii this game is still marked as a PS3 and Xbox 360 exclusive, although Capcom has always been flexible with the meaning of the word ‘exclusive’. We might see some sort of adaptation in the future.

I love the screen captions. It makes me think of when “Snake Eater” came out.
